Hello everyone. Recently I left my laptop open under a window and likely due to condensation water got in. I might have spilled some water randomly at night but I certainly don't think so. Some of the keys work, many do not. More interestingly and annoyingly, the 'z' key will force its way even on other keys: so something is definitely not right and a hardware issue. Not related to specific keys being broken, but the entire keyboard altogether. To note, I have reinstalled all drivers, windows, and it is not a software related issue.

 

I read with a salesman of keyboards that my current model its keyboard comes off only with the entire front of the laptop. That is, not the case itself or the area behind the monitor, but the material surrounding and including the keyboard. The costs are significant, around 150€ for a keyboard and its accompanied material. As such, I want to limit the repair costs. Now comes my actual issue. I do not know how to precisely repair this specific keyboard, and if I am able to do so, I still am uncertain if it would fix the issue. That is why I would like to ask to you all:

1. does anyone have any idea how to remove the specific keyboard and its surrounding material (what you rest your hands on;

2. does anyone think that replacing the keyboard would actually take away the problem? Maybe the issue lies deeper and more components relating to the communication between keyboard and other hardware are broken? Can this occur?

3. When opening the notebook on the bottom I saw no way that the keyboard is connected with screws, but I did see certain little hooks that likely kept the material and the keyboard in place. I can take a picture of this, in case someone believes it might be essential information. Does anyone have any experience with this model?

 

Thank you kindly in advance for replying. Even an answer to one of the questions would help. I am certain that if I were to ask someone to do the repairs, which I might, I am paying double the amount of the keyboard itself. I added as an attachment the failure ID I got after the keyboard test:

tl;dr: water spillage likely ruined my keyboard altogether, not just keys. Keyboard replacement apparently goes hand in hand with taking off the palmrest, touchpad surroundings etc. altogether. Completely unaware on how to take it off. Anyone help?

You have pretty well identified the problem and its magnitude. I am linking the Service Manual here:

The ONLY replaceable part is the whole top cover with embedded keyboard. 

 

These are listed on p. 16 of the Manual. I am going to arbitrarily pick one for Dutch language:

 

For use in the Netherlands L01925-B31

 

This may or may not be your keyboard depending on color and backlight. 

 

You will not even find instructions in the Manual for how to replace the top cover. It requires total disassembly of all components then reattaching everything piece by piece to a new top cover. Very tedious and exacting work but it can be done.
