My keyboard has been malfunctioning for weeks and I’d like to fix the problem myself. Certain keys intermittently stop working and airplane mode constantly switches on and off. I bought a replacement keyboard and then found out when I took it apart that the keyboard is held in with a metal plate with plastic rivets, rather than screws. Very disappointing. Is there a place that I can purchase the whole top piece, rather than try break and re-glue rivets? I know that it probably won’t work or be the same if I do. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Tommy

Here is the Service Manual:

See p. 23 for list of top covers including keyboard. You got caught up in what I believe is a scam where sellers offer these keyboards and do not tell you the keyboard is not really a separate replaceable part. Also look at p. 75:

The top cover/keyboard spare part remains after all other spare parts have been removed.

This task is not easy. Requires complete disassembly and then you basically reassemble the laptop onto the replacement top cover. A PhD level laptop technician assignment. Also I will point out your laptop is not a super high end machine to say the least. I suspect we could perhaps find you one with a dead hard drive or broken screen on eBay for less than you will find the top cover. Anyway look at the parts list and tell us what color you need and we (I) can help you find that part or a "donor" laptop or perhaps have a frank discussion about just replacing the laptop with something more capable.
