  • My Hp envy x360 2019 convertible will randomly make a sound that is like a chainsaw being started up, or hedge clipper, but most of the time there is a faint purring sound coming from the fan. It seems to only do it when put under moderate strain. It’s not constant, just sudden. It feels like it’s possbibly coming from the center-left. I had the inside, including the fan, recently cleaned of all dust, and it hasn’t made the loud chainsaw noise after about 30 minutes of use, but the faint rattling still remains.

Hi @staytuned25,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

A sudden loud noise like a buzz saw coming from your HP Envy x360 laptop could indicate a hardware issue. Here are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot the problem.

  • Check for Obstructions: Make sure there's nothing physically obstructing the laptop's cooling fans or any other moving parts. Dust or debris can sometimes cause unusual noises.
  • Overheating: Overheating can cause the fans to spin at high speeds and create loud noises. Check if the laptop is getting excessively hot. Make sure it's being used on a flat surface that allows for proper airflow. You might also want to clean out any dust from the cooling vents using compressed air.
  • Software Issues: Sometimes, certain software processes can cause the laptop's fans to run at high speeds. Make sure your operating system and drivers are up to date. You can also check the Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) to see if any particular program is causing high CPU usage.
  • Background Processes: Close any unnecessary applications that might be running in the background and using system resources. This could potentially alleviate the strain on the system and reduce fan noise.
  • BIOS Update: Check if there are any BIOS updates available for your laptop. Sometimes, firmware updates can help with fan control and overall system stability.
  • Hardware Issues: If the noise persists, it might be a sign of a more serious hardware problem.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
