HP Pavilion x360 - 14-cd0087tu

I have this inexplicable problem that i am facing from yesterday

Each time i disconnect the AC power and then start my laptop by pushing the physical power button on, the laptop keyboard and touchpad are available to me for use when the system has booted to the desktop.

If i am working on battery power and shut down the laptop and then power up again by pushing the physical power button on the KB and touchpad are available to use.   This is normal  behaviour

BUT NOW FOR THE WEIRD PART / UNBELIEVABLE BEHAVIOUR

However, when i choose RESTART (not shut down) from the power options, the touchpad and mouse are non-functional when the system has boots up gain to the desktop  irrespective of whether the laptop is powered by the AC adapter or the battery.

All updates to-date are installed

The keyboard and mouse drivers are up to date

i have re-updated the bios too

I restored an earlier image of my OS (when this problem did not exist) dating back to Jan 2024 but the above problem recurred leading me to believe that this is a hardware issue

Summary:

Cold starting (booting) the laptop with battery power or after disconnecting and reconnecting  AC power - KB or mouse available

Warm restarting (booting) the laptop - no KB or mouse available

Yes the laptop was opened to tighten the lid hinges and to replace the TF03X battery (i believe that this laptop HP Pavilion x360 does not have a CMOS battery to pull

Hi @perfection161,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The issue you're experiencing with your HP Pavilion X360 - 14-Cd0087tu, where the keyboard and touchpad become non-functional after a restart, is quite perplexing. Given the steps you've already taken, here are some further troubleshooting steps that might help identify and resolve the issue.

BIOS and UEFI Settings

  • Reset BIOS to Default: Enter the BIOS/UEFI settings during startup (usually by pressing Esc, F2, F10, or Delete during boot) and reset the settings to default. Sometimes, incorrect settings can cause hardware issues.
  • Check for Specific Touchpad/Keyboard Settings: Look for any specific settings related to the keyboard and touchpad in the BIOS/UEFI. Ensure they are enabled.

Driver and Device Manager Checks

  • Reinstall Drivers: Even though you have updated the drivers, try uninstalling the keyboard and touchpad drivers from Device Manager, then restart your laptop to let Windows reinstall them.
  • Disable Power Management for USB Root Hub: Sometimes, power management settings can cause issues with peripheral devices. Go to Device Manager > Universal Serial Bus controllers > USB Root Hub > Properties > Power Management tab, and uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power."

Windows Fast Startup

  • Disable Fast Startup: Fast Startup can sometimes cause hardware issues on restart. Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do > Change settings that are currently unavailable > uncheck "Turn on fast startup."

Hardware Checks

  • Check Internal Connections: Since you mentioned opening the laptop to tighten hinges and replace the battery, ensure that all internal connections, especially for the touchpad and keyboard, are secure. Re-seat the connectors if necessary.
  • Inspect Battery Replacement: Verify that the new battery is properly seated and compatible. Sometimes, a slight variation in battery specifications can cause unexpected behavior.

Event Viewer Logs

  • Check Event Viewer: Look at the Event Viewer logs for any warnings or errors that occur around the time of the restart. This can give clues if a particular driver or service is failing to load properly.

Operating System Integrity

  • System File Check and DISM: Run the System File Checker (sfc /scannow) and DISM tool (DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth) to repair any potential corrupted system files.

External Peripherals

  • Test with No External Devices: Ensure no external peripherals (USB devices, external mice, keyboards) are connected during restart to rule out conflicts.

HP Diagnostic Tools

  • HP Hardware Diagnostics: Use the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics tool to run a full system test to identify any hardware issues.

Firmware Updates

  • Check for Firmware Updates: Apart from BIOS updates, check if there are any firmware updates for the keyboard or touchpad from HP's support site.

If none of these steps resolve the issue, it might indeed point to a deeper hardware problem. Since the problem persists even after restoring an earlier OS image, it suggests the issue could be related to hardware or firmware.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thanks ALDEN4

I have done everything above

No missing or old drivers to update

Hardware is fine

sfc - no faults reported in log

no logs showing anything amiss in event viewer

HP diagnostics - reports NO problem

Issue persists on restoring laptop image to a time when there was no problems

Reinstalled windows 11 and PROBLEM PERSISTS

The only time i get my mouse and laptop is when i enter BIOS or F9 or F2 on bootup

Must be a hardware fault but HP engineers in the authorized service center in Mumbai CANNOT discover the fault
