Hi there I have a hp laptop and one morning just didn't turn on - I've  checked the charger cable and the light comes on the side of the laptop so I don't think the charger is the issue- thanks

Hi @JoshOng98,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I know how worrying it is when your HP laptop suddenly won’t turn on, especially when the charging light is on, which suggests the power adapter is working. Let’s walk through a few steps to help diagnose and possibly revive your laptop.

Step-by-Step Troubleshooting for an HP Laptop Not Powering On

1. Perform a Hard Reset

This clears any residual charge and resets the hardware.

  • Disconnect the power adapter.
  • If the battery is removable, take it out.
  • Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power adapter (without battery if removable) and try turning it on.

2. Check for LED or Fan Activity

  • Do any lights blink (Caps Lock, power button)?
  • Do you hear fan noise or see the screen flicker briefly?

If yes, it may be a POST error or display issue.

3. Try External Display

  • Connect your laptop to an external monitor or TV via HDMI or USB-C.
  • Power on the laptop and check if the external display shows anything.

This helps rule out a screen failure.

4. Reseat RAM and SSD (If Accessible)

If you're comfortable opening the back panel:

  • Remove and reseat the RAM and SSD.
  • This can fix boot issues caused by loose connections.

5. BIOS Recovery Attempt

Some HP laptops support BIOS recovery:

  • Press and hold Windows + B, then press and hold Power for 2–3 seconds.
  • Release Power, but keep holding Windows + B for 10 seconds.
  • If successful, the BIOS recovery screen should appear.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
