Victus by HP 15.6 inch Gaming Laptop 15-fa1000 (9P833AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

Model: HP Victus Gaming Laptop 15-fa1317TX My laptop gets extremely hot while gaming, reaching around 100°C, and then suddenly hibernates due to overheating. This has happened multiple times. I have also cleaned the laptop and reapplied the thermal paste, but the issue persists. Please help diagnose the overheating issue.

Hi @Pranav0707,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for providing the complete product details. We understand that your Victus by HP 15.6-inch Gaming Laptop 15-fa1000 (9P833AV), model 15-fa1317TX, running Windows 11, is reaching approximately 100°C while gaming and then hibernating, and that this has happened repeatedly. We also noted that you have already cleaned the laptop and reapplied the thermal paste, so we will not ask you to repeat those steps.

Before proceeding further, we would like to check a few important details:

  • Where is the notebook normally placed while gaming? Is it on a hard, flat surface such as a desk/table, or is it sometimes used on a bed, couch, lap, or another soft surface?
  • Please check whether anything is blocking the air intake or exhaust vents while you are gaming.
  • When the notebook becomes hot, can you hear both cooling fans operating?
  • When you turn the notebook on, do you receive a System Fan (90B), System Fan (90A), System Fan Speed Failure (90F), or any other warning/error before Windows starts? HP documents these errors as being associated with the cooling or heat-removal system. If an error appears, please share a clear picture of the complete message. Please make sure that the serial number or other personal information is not visible.
  • Have you already run the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics tests? If yes, please let us know which tests were run and whether they passed or failed.

Please run HP Hardware Diagnostics
Because the notebook is repeatedly shutting down or hibernating when it becomes extremely hot, the next step we recommend is testing the hardware rather than continuing to change Windows settings.

HP provides HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI specifically for testing hardware components. HP recommends starting with the Fast Test, and if no failure is detected while hardware symptoms continue, running the Extensive Test.

  1. Completely shut down the notebook.
  2. Turn the notebook on and immediately press Esc repeatedly.
  3. When the Startup Menu appears, press F2 to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.
  4. Run the available System Tests/Component Tests.
  5. If your diagnostics version provides a Fan/Thermal test, please run that as well. HP diagnostic documentation confirms that UEFI testing can include a fan-speed and thermal test.
  6. If a test fails, please make a note of the Failure ID and the component that failed.

Please do not post the notebook's serial number publicly.

If you receive a 90B or another fan-related startup error, please tell us exactly which error appears. For example, HP states that a System Fan (90B) message means the system has detected that a cooling fan is not operating correctly.

Once you have completed the F2 diagnostics, please reply with the test results/Failure ID, whether both fans appear to be operating, whether any 90B or other startup error appears, and whether the notebook is being used on a hard, flat surface with the vents unobstructed.

With those results, we can determine the appropriate next step without repeating the cleaning and thermal-paste work you have already completed.

Take care and have a good day.

I'm an HP Employee.
