My laptop is overheating even with the most minimal activity and also when it is charging
I have tried all the troubleshooting options online and nothing solves it
All the software are up to date and I cleaned the fans with canned air

@itaymott, Hello and welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for posting your question. I'm here to help you get things back on track.
I understand how frustrating it can be when your laptop overheats even during light usage or while charging. You've already done a great job by updating your software and cleaning the fans, let’s go a few steps further to isolate and resolve the issue.
Check for Background Processes
Even minimal activity can trigger overheating if background apps are consuming CPU.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager
- Go to the Processes tab and sort by CPU usage
- Identify and end any unnecessary high-usage tasks
Run HP Hardware Diagnostics
HP provides built-in diagnostics to check for thermal issues.
- Turn off the laptop
- Turn it back on and immediately press Esc repeatedly, then F2 to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics
- Run the System Tests > Extensive Test (especially the Thermal test)
Update BIOS and Chipset Drivers
Outdated BIOS or chipset drivers can cause thermal mismanagement.
- Visit the HP Support Page - Official HP® Support
- Enter your laptop’s model number
- Download and install the latest BIOS and Chipset drivers
Adjust Power Settings
Set your laptop to a cooler performance profile:
- Go to Control Panel > Power Options
- Select Power Saver or create a custom plan with:
- Processor power management > Maximum processor state: set to 80–90%
- System cooling policy: set to Active
Clean Vents and Elevate the Laptop
Even after canned air cleaning, internal dust buildup or poor airflow can persist.
- Use a cooling pad or elevate the rear of the laptop slightly
- Ensure vents are not blocked by soft surfaces like beds or cushions
Check Battery Health
Overheating while charging could indicate a battery issue.
- Use the HP Support Assistant to run a battery check:
- Download: HP Support Assistant | HP® Support
If none of the above steps resolve the issue, it may be a hardware-related problem. In that case, please visit the nearest HP authorized service center, the service team will check and assist you.
Kindly follow this link to locate the nearest HP service center: Ricerca centro assistenza HP® - Italia | Supporto HP®
