Greetings,
I believe my HP Pavilion laptop originally came with a 45W power adapter. I have a separate 100W USB-C compatible power adapter that I've verified works with the laptop. However, I want to make sure that using this adapter won't cause any issues, such as overheating or negatively impact long-term performance. Can you provide guidance on whether it's safe to use the 100W adapter with my laptop?
Thank you in advance!

Hi @unvarnished,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
I appreciate your thoughtful approach to ensuring your HP Pavilion laptop stays safe and performs reliably. You're absolutely right to ask before using a 100W USB-C power adapter in place of the original 45W adapter, and I’m here to reassure you with clarity and care.
🔌 Is It Safe to Use a 100W USB-C Adapter with Your HP Pavilion Laptop?
Yes, it is safe and here’s why:
Your HP Pavilion laptop is designed with smart power regulation built into its motherboard and charging circuitry. When you connect a USB-C Power Delivery (PD) compliant adapter, the laptop negotiates the exact amount of power it needs, in your case, typically 45W. Even though the adapter can deliver up to 100W, your laptop will only draw what it requires, no more.
Will It Overheat or Affect Long-Term Performance?
Not at all. In fact, using a higher-capacity adapter can be beneficial:
- Cooler operation: Since the adapter isn’t working near its maximum capacity, it tends to run cooler.
- Stable charging: It can maintain consistent power delivery even during multitasking or light gaming.
- No stress on internal components: Your laptop’s internal power management ensures safe operation.
Just make sure the adapter and cable are USB-C PD certified and from a reputable brand or HP-certified accessory line.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have an amazing day!
