I have had my HP Pavilion Laptop 15 for close to two months now and I have been having a persistent problem with it. Whenever I want to sleep or hibernate my computer, whether by manually doing it through the start menu or automatically after not using the device for a period of time, it just shuts down. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling my graphics driver, changing the power option settings, and checking for Windows and HP system updates. Can someone please help me resolve this problem as it is a real pain to have to reopen all my programs on a daily basis.

Welcome to the HP Support Community!
I recommend you run the power troubleshooter. The power timeout settings can affect your PC on various levels and the startup process is one of them. This checks how long the PC waits before turning off the display and to enter in sleep mode.
Here is how it is done.
Press ‘Win + I’ shortcut keys to open Windows Settings app.
Click on ‘Update & Security’, then go to the ‘Troubleshoot’ section from the left-side menu.
Scroll downwards a bit and click on the ‘Power’ option.
Click on ‘Run the Troubleshooter’. It will start detecting the problems and if it founds, go ahead fixing it.
If you continue facing the issue, then follow the below steps.
On your keyboard, press ‘Windows key + R’ and type ‘Powercfg.cpl’ in it.
Hit the ‘Enter’ key to open power options in the control panel.
From the left-hand side, click on ‘Choose what the power buttons do’.
Then, click on the link ‘Change settings that are currently unavailable’.
From the bottom given power button options, uncheck the ‘Turn on fast startup’ option.
Click on ‘Save changes’ button.
If the issue persists, follow the below steps.
Go to the ‘Start’ menu and type ‘Control panel’ then hit the ‘Enter’ key.
From the top-right filter, choose ‘Large icons’ and navigate to the ‘Power Options’,
Click and open the ‘Power options’.
Select the power plan according to your requirement and click on ‘Change plan settings’.
Click on ‘Change advanced power settings’.
In the power options windows, click on the button ‘Restore plan defaults’.
Click on ‘Apply’ and then ‘OK’ button.
Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!

@The_Fossette
Hello, thank you for the possible solutions. Unfortunately I tried all of them and they did not solve my problem. I do not think it is something with my power options because whenever my computer is supposed to go to sleep it just shuts down even if the settings says it will sleep. For example, after 1 hour while plugged in, my computer should go to sleep, but instead it just shuts down right away. Do you know of any other possible solutions?

Try updating the BIOS your PC and check if it helps.
Update the BIOS using this link.
Check if the pin inside the DC or charging port is bent or broken.
Please perform below-shown steps to resolve the issue:
Step 01. Click on the Start Button
Step 02. Type "Device Manager" in the start search box & open the Device Manager
Step 03. Look for Batteries and expand it by click on the + symbol on the left
Step 04. Right Click on "Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery" & uninstall
Note: This Battery driver will get reinstalled automatically when you restart the Notebook again
Step 05. Please Shutdown the Notebook
Step 06. Please remove the Battery and unplug the Power Adapter
Step 07. Press and Hold the Power Button for full 1 Minute
Step 08. Go ahead and put back the Battery and connect the Power Adapter
Step 09. Look for "Plugged In Charging" message on the Battery icon
Method 1: Run the Power Troubleshooter
- Open Control Panel.
- Type “Troubleshooting” in the search bar and press “Enter”.
- In the “Troubleshooting” window, click on “View All” on the left pane.
- Click on “Power”.
- Click on “Advanced” and then click on “Run as Administrator”.
- Click “Next” and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the troubleshooting process.
Method 2:
It could be a compatibility issue with the new Fast Startup component.
Try the below steps and check:
- Open Control Panel / Power Options.
- On the Left side menu, select Choose what the power buttons do.
- Select Change settings that are currently unavailable.
- Scroll down to the Shutdown settings section.
- Remove the check mark from the Turn on Fast Startup option.
- Select the Save Changes Button.
Shut Down the computer, wait a couple of minutes and then use the Power Button to start the computer.
Check if it helps.
Refer this article to further troubleshoot battery issues with your laptop.
Also, try running a battery test on your PC and check if the battery is functioning correctly.

Also, you can run a system diagnostics test from F2 reset this article to know more information. Link: https://support.hp.com/lt-en/document/c03467259
I hope that helps.

Thank you very much for the tips. However, without even trying any of them my computer oddly fixed the problem itself somehow. Now my sleep, hibernate, and shut down functions work properly. I am not really sure what happened as it just fixed itself randomly without me having to do much. I will still keep your tips in mind if this problem occurs again. Thank you.
