HP Pavilion Gaming 17-cd1000 Laptop PC (15F82AV)

Recently I noticed my laptop was very slow. I didn't understand the reason why it was so slow, so at the time I didn't even connect the issue to power related reasons. I was also not getting any notifications from HP utility with "Incompatible power source" (all of this in windows 10 home, the same that the laptop had when I bought it a few years ago)

So I thought perhaps it was a problem with the windows installation, so I did an upgrade to windows 11 from windows 10. All went well with the update (directly from Windows Update), but the performance in windows 11 was basically the same as in windows 10.

So I decided to do a full re-installation from scratch of windows 11, which was also completed without issues. But once again, performance was sub-par.
The difference was that in this windows installation, I started getting the HP utility notification of "Incompatible power source".

So I thought there was an issue with the charger and for a moment unplugged it from the laptop. When on battery only, the laptop performed significantly better. When I plugged the charger back to the laptop, it was slow again.

When I say slow, I mean for example opening the file explorer in windows and getting a "response" only 2-3 seconds later. On battery, the same test shows a "response" in less than a second (almost immediate). The file explorer is only an example. Slow, sluggish performance was across the board in every other windows application.

It was clear for me at this point that the charger had an issue. So I bought another charger for the same type of laptop (it's a 200w charger from HP).
When I got it, the problems remained and would also get the "Incompatible power source detected" notification.

So I did a full system test from HP Tools, all components passed, including battery and AC Adapter (I was using the new one at this point), updated the BIOS to the latest version...and nothing solved the issue. Performance is windows is very sluggish and still get the "Incompatible power source detected", with the new charger and with the original charger as well.

At this point I can only imagine it's a hardware issue, a problem with the power connection of the laptop itself, since two different chargers (one is the original) and two different power outlets, that pass the HP tests, are considered to be "incompatible".

I also noticed that connecting the AC adapter to the laptop, not always turns on the LED light that shows the laptop is connected to AC. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't, but always says "Incompatible power source detected" in the notification from HP utility.

One further information is that both the original adapter and the new one, when plugged to the laptop and the LED light turns on, charge the battery fine.

So my question is: is there a software way to "disable" this behavior of "when incompatible power source detected, reduce performance" ?

Or is this only solved with a hardware repair ?

Thanks

Hi @MarcoSilva29,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding slow performance on the HP Pavilion Gaming 17-cd1000 laptop!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Try these steps:

Verify Power Adapter:

  • Ensure that you are using the original HP power adapter that came with your laptop. Incompatible or lower wattage adapters can impact performance.
  • Check the power adapter for signs of damage or wear. If you suspect it might be failing, consider replacing it with a compatible HP adapter.

Battery Health:

  • Use the HP Support Assistant to check the battery health. A failing battery may lead to performance issues if it's not supplying enough power.
  • If the battery is degraded, consider replacing it.

Windows Power Settings:

  • Go to Control Panel > Power Options and ensure your laptop is set to "High Performance" mode. This mode optimizes performance but may consume more battery power.

Check Background Processes:

  • Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) and review the processes running. Some applications might be using excessive CPU or memory, slowing down the overall system.
  • Consider disabling or uninstalling unnecessary background programs.

Update Drivers:

  • Ensure all drivers, especially chipset and graphics drivers, are updated. You can update them via Device Manager or download the latest versions from the HP Support website.

Disk and RAM Usage:

  • Check for disk usage spikes which could indicate problems with storage. Perform a disk cleanup to remove temporary files and declutter your hard drive.
  • Verify RAM usage and consider upgrading your RAM if it's regularly maxing out during normal use.

Perform System Maintenance:

  • Run diagnostics using HP Support Assistant to check for any hardware issues and apply fixes.
  • Keep your operating system and software updated to ensure optimal performance.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for the suggestions, but the issue seems to be hardware related and I'm sending it for repair.
