Hi @Vigg,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The issue you're describing, where your HP Laptop turns off immediately but works after being exposed to sunlight for a few minutes, along with the CMOS reset (502) error, points to a problem related to the CMOS battery or a potential thermal issue. Here's an overview of potential causes and solutions.
Potential Causes:
CMOS Battery Issue:
- The CMOS battery is responsible for maintaining BIOS settings, including time and configuration, when the laptop is off. A CMOS reset error indicates that the BIOS is unable to retain its settings, which could be caused by a weak or failing CMOS battery.
- Heating the laptop in the sunlight may temporarily boost the performance of a weak battery, allowing the laptop to turn on.
Temperature or Thermal Sensors:
- If the laptop only starts after being heated, it could point to a problem with a temperature sensor or other internal components that may be reacting to the heat.
- Laptops are equipped with sensors that prevent startup if temperatures are too low or high. A sensor failure could cause the laptop to believe it’s not in an operational range until it receives heat.
Static Discharge or Power Supply Issue:
- Static electricity or power supply issues could be affecting the motherboard's power delivery. Heating the laptop in sunlight might discharge static buildup or temporarily affect power flow, making the laptop power on.
Steps to Fix:
CMOS Battery Replacement:
- The first step should be replacing the CMOS battery, as this is the most likely culprit. The CMOS battery is typically a small, coin-shaped battery located on the motherboard.
Check for BIOS Update:
- Sometimes, the CMOS error is due to a BIOS glitch. Visit HP's website and check if a BIOS update is available for your laptop model.
- Follow instructions carefully to avoid bricking your laptop during the update.
Run Full Diagnostics Again:
- Since the diagnostics showed everything is fine, try running a full system diagnostic in the BIOS again, especially focusing on hardware components like the battery, memory, and motherboard.
Check Power Connections:
- Ensure the battery and all internal connections are secure. Over time, connectors can loosen, which may lead to intermittent issues.
Temporary Workaround:
Until the issue is resolved, try keeping the laptop in a warm place for a few minutes before turning it on if the issue persists, as you have been doing.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
