My laptop was acting funny. First thing I noticed was it stopped reading my external hard drive. Then it was restarting unusually slower. Nothing I did within windows was allowing the hard drive to be discovered. I shut down the laptop and took it apart to see if maybe the ribbon cable somehow was loose but it wasn’t and everything looked ok. When I put it back together and started it up, the laptop was completely dead. Would not power on with the adapter plugged in with or without the battery inserted. I was getting the correct voltage to the motherboard but I could not figure out the problem. I figured there was a short on the motherboard so I ordered a replacement. I replaced the motherboard, put everything back together, and nothing. Seemed to have the same issue. Except this time I removed the battery and it powered on with the power adapter plugged in only. Will not power on once the battery is inserted with or without the power adapter connected. I tried turning it on and putting in the battery while windows was running but the laptop immediately powers off once the battery is inserted. I tried resetting the power settings, updating the BIOS, and uninstalling and reinstalling the battery drivers but nothing is working. I saw another forum with the same issue but they had bought a brand new second battery and continued having the same problem and no one responded with an answer.  Hesitant to buy a new battery to continue having the same problem so my next step is to attempt to test the battery. Please help if anyone has had this problem.

Update:

Bought a third party brand new replacement battery that was made for my laptop. It wasn’t charging, not recognized by the system, and It would not power on from the battery power only. Laptop worked with the battery inserted and power cord connected and would stay powered on when the power cord was disconnected. Thought it was because it was 11.55v 55.8wh and not 11.4v 48.01wh so I bought an authentic hp battery. That battery worked even less. It would not stay on when the power cord was disconnected. Both batteries could not be recognized by the system so any test would just fail and say no battery inserted. Only conclusion is the replacement motherboard I bought came with a defective battery controller. Haven’t gotten it tested to know for sure, but the only other thing I think it could be is the power/audio board. Is there anyway that can malfunction and effect the battery controller? The laptop powers on when plugged in so I don’t think so but I’m not a computer technician and don’t have $50 to waste for someone to tell me something I already have an idea of. Already happened to me when  I replaced my motherboard. Everything led me to the conclusion I needed to replace the motherboard but I didn’t know for sure and I ended up paying someone $50 to tell me  “your mother board needs replacement”. The original battery that was plugged in when my motherboard malfunctioned doesn’t work at all. So I believe either the battery malfunctioned and shorted my motherboard, or there was a short somewhere on the motherboard that fried the original battery. Idk. A giant headache. Next laptop is not going to be a HP. This problem happened exactly 5 months after the one year warranty expired. Seems to be a normal problem with lower end HP’s. Anyone have any feedback or similar problems please share any feedback. Thanks.
