Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My laptop is currently having issues seeing the AC adapter whenever my battery is plugged in. Right now, I need to take out my battery in order for the laptop to see that it is plugged in. Once I take out the battery and plug in the AC adapter, it lights up and I can replug in my battery and it will charge. However, if I remove the AC adapter at any point, there is a good chance it will not see the AC adapter again unless I take out the battery. This is really annoying, as I have been low on battery in the middle of video calls and had to turn my laptop completely off, remove the battery, plug in the AC adapter, reinsert the battery, and then wait for my computer to boot up.

I have tried getting a new battery from a trusted supplier, and it passes the HP Support Assistant Battery Check. It's cycle count is at 1/300, and so it is pretty much a brand new battery. I did this because I figured maybe the firmware on the battery was bad and causing this issue. But that did not solve it.

I also tried uninstalling the ACPI-compliant Battery Control Method as well. When I reboot, Windows reinstalls the original driver from 2006. I have looked for updated drivers, but can't find any, and neither can Windows. My laptop's software and drivers page has no drivers for the battery, either. 😞

So that is where I am at. I have:

  • Ran the HP Battery Test to make sure the battery is good
  • Tried uninstalling the ACPI-compliant battery control method
  • Tried taking out the battery, holding the power button, and turning it back on (hard reset)
  • Tried doing countless searches to figure out what could be wrong.

Can any of you help me out? I am not really sure what else to try at this point. I do not know the last time it worked without doing this, and so I do not have a system restore point to go back to.

Hi@tkoalas,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.Apologies for all the inconvenience. Request you to follow the below troubleshooting steps

I have a few steps listed below that should help you resolve this concern:

Turn off the laptop and turn it back on after 30mins.

Reinstalled Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery under device manager:

1) In the search box, type and open “Device Manager”.

2) Expand “Batteries”.

3) Right-click the "Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery" that is listed there.

4) Click on “Uninstall”.

5) At the prompt put a check in the box to remove the current driver

6) Shutdown the computer.

7) Remove the battery for minute and then put it back in.

😎 When the computer comes back up it should automatically find the driver.

9) Go to Device Manager.

10) Expand Batteries.

11) Right-click the "Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery" that is listed there.

12) Click "Search automatically for updated driver software"

Do the same thing with Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Embedded Controller.

Restart the computer and the issue should be fixed.

Let's try this:

Run hardware diagnostics test on battery and Charger:

Use the following steps to open the Component Tests menu.

  1. Hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.
  2. Turn on the computer and immediately press Esc repeatedly, about once every second. When the menu appears, press the F2 key.
  3. On the main menu, click Component Tests.
  4. The Component Tests menu displays. Your Component Tests menu might be different, depending on the components installed on your computer.
  5. To run both tests simultaneously, in the Component Tests menu, click Power Source, and then click Run once. Each component can also be tested individually.

AC Adapter Test:

The AC Adapter test provides an interactive test to determine if the AC power adapter is functioning properly. A good battery is required for this test. Before running the AC Adapter Test, HP recommends verifying that your computer can receive power by connecting a known working AC adapter.

Follow these steps to perform the AC Adapter Test.

  • In the Component Tests menu, click Power, and then click an AC Adapter Test.
  • Click Run once.
  • The AC Adapter Test begins.
  • When the test is complete, the results are displayed on the screen.

Battery Test:

Follow these steps to perform the Battery Test:

  1. In the Component Tests menu, click Power, and then click Battery.
  2. Click Run once. The Battery Test begins.
  3. When the battery test is complete, the results are displayed on the screen. For additional battery information, click Battery Details.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

Please click “Accept as Solution” if you feel my post solved your issue, it will help others find the solution.

Its not software so resetting and drivers are not going to help. Can you post a full advanced diagnostic test result on the battery? Is it a genuine HP battery or a third party?
