I read that a laptop will run without a battery when plugged into AC wall socket.  I removed the battery, which won't charge, and now the laptop won't start.

What do I do now?

Hi @DeanS-21_

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I'm really sorry your laptop isn’t powering on without the battery—it’s frustrating when something that should work just doesn’t respond. Most HP laptops are designed to run directly on AC power even with the battery removed, so let’s walk through a few steps to help restore power and get your system back to life.

Try these steps to troubleshoot AC-only startup:

1. Confirm direct wall connection

Some power strips or surge protectors can block startup current.

  • Unplug the adapter from the wall
  • Plug it directly into a wall socket
  • Ensure the power cord is fully seated at both ends
  • Check for any LED indicator on the adapter or laptop

2. Perform a hard reset

This clears residual charge and resets the embedded controller.

  • Disconnect the AC adapter
  • Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds
  • Reconnect the AC adapter (without battery)
  • Press the power button again

3. Inspect the AC adapter

A faulty adapter may deliver low voltage, preventing startup.

  • If available, test with a compatible HP adapter
  • Check for any fraying or damage to the cable
  • If the adapter has a removable tip, ensure it’s fully seated

4. Check for signs of life

Even without booting, look for:

  • Fan spin
  • LED blink or keyboard backlight
  • Display flicker or logo flash

If none of these appear, the system may not be receiving power at all.

5. Reinsert the battery and test again

Even if the battery won’t charge, it may still complete the power circuit.

  • Reinsert the battery
  • Connect the AC adapter
  • Try powering on again
  • If it starts, the system may rely on battery presence for initial power-on

Let me know your exact HP laptop model and whether any lights or sounds appear when you press the power button. Once we confirm power delivery, we can guide further steps to restore full functionality.
