I attempted to open my hp pavilion laptop and heard a sound like the hinges were straining after lifting the lid 1 to 2 inches. I cannot open it any further because the hinges seem to be locked (or stuck) and I do not want to break them. Both of the hinges are like this. What should I do?

Did you close and open it, again? Anything happen or it just stays stuck at certain raised height? Can a local PC repair shop take a look at it? Or just force it to open up and see what happens?

I had noticed now and again when opening the laptop that a sound was coming from the hinges when I would adjust the screen/lid, but there was no difficulty in doing so. It opened and closed okay.
But, as I tried to open it on Saturday, it felt like it did not want to open (like it was stiff). I opened it almost half way when the hinges started making a sound that made me really nervous because I felt like I would break the lid if I tried to open it all the way. So, I closed it, and it closed normally with no stiffness or sounds. I thought maybe I needed to close it, look at the hinges (they looked fine to me) and reopen it . But, when I tried to reopen the lid, it would only open maybe 1 or 2 inches. It does not remain raised. I am afraid to force it open, because the hinges seem to be intact and I do not want to break or crack them. (My old computer has a broken hinge).
I did contact a repair company that I found from the hp website for my area. I was told that broken hinges are a known issue with hp laptops (and other laptop companies as well) that are made of plastic and that it could be costly to fix. The repair guy says I can bring it in for them to look at, but that parts are not easy to come by. I hope it can be fixed.
