I just got a new HP Elitebook 840 G5. It came with a nice little 45W power supply. But it uses the 3-pin mickey mouse / clover leaf interface for the power cord, and those cables are really thick and bulky / heavy.
My old laptop was a Lenovo Thinkpad, and whilst the majority of Lenovo power supplies (at least here in Europe) also use this 3-pin mickey mouse / clover leaf interface, Lenovo also did a "Travel Power Supply", which used the 2-pin "figure of 8" style interface. The 2-pin figure-of-8 power cables are much thinner, lighter and less bulky, so much more practical when travelling. Also, I could use the same cable for some of my other electronic devices, like my Anker USB multiport charger.

Hi,
If we look in the service manual we see that there is a 2prong adapter available with part number 742436-001
Page 31 of service manual:

You can try searching online with part number or in HP parts store in your country:
For traveling you could also considerr one of the HP travel ac adapters or the slim ac adapters. (you can use 65W adapter)

Hope it helps,

Hi iomare,
Thanks for your advice.
Thanks also to David_J_W. Right now, I've done what David_J_W suggested. I ordered a 0.5 metre 3-pin power cord, which will be much less bulky than the 1.8m cable which was provided with the laptop.
Unfortunately, the HP Travel Power Adapter looks like it's a "wall wart" style charger, which sometimes just won't work in certain locations (eg. if the plug socket is close to the ground, or if there's furniture in front of it. It looks like the removable head on this HP Travel Power Adapter also uses a 3-pin clover-leaf interface. If it used the 2-pin figure-of-8 interface, it would be perfect. Does anybody on this forum have one of these Travel Power Adapters (https://store.hp.com/app/pdp/hp-travel-power-adapter-65w), and can confirm what the interface is?
I also found at home an adapter which would allow me to plug one of my old 2-pin figure-of-8 cables into the 3-pin clover-leaf power supply. But I'm not convinced that this would be entirely safe!
My other idea was to look for a USB Type C charger, as the EliteBook 840 G5 now allows charging through the USB Type C ports. But I was really hoping to use something like the following product from Anker: https://www.anker.com/products/variant/powerport-speed-pd-5/A2056111. This would allow me to charge my HP laptop, my iPhone, my iPad, and many other devices. It also has a removable power cable, which is usually the figure-of-8 cable on Anker's products. But from what I can see, it only outputs 30W, whereas I believe the EliteBook 840 G5 needs 45W.
I know that HP also do a USB Type C charger. See https://store.hp.com/UKStore/Merch/Product.aspx?id=V5Y26AA&opt=ABU&sel=ACC. But it has a fixed USB type C cable and no other available USB slots (so I can't use it for any of my other devices). And I think the wall-wart head can be replaced by a cable, but again only the 3-pin cloverleaf interface.....

Defeating the grounding requirement on a C6 ('Mickey Mouse') receptacle is likely to be unsafe - as you say, don't do that.
Many HP laptops that have a 4.5mm power jack don't support USB-C charging. I've never tried to USB-C charge this ZBook Studio x360 G5, but I have read out the advertised power sink capability from the UCSI controller and it only advertises 15W sink capacity. If it does genuinely provide that sink capacity, it will at most only charge the battery fairly slowly when powered off. It's not going to power the system when turned on (45W TDP processor, dedicated GPU, high brightness 4K screen - the factory power adapter is 150W).
You could see if the part number @iomare dug up for a 2 pin power adapter in the Maintenance and Service Guide is available anywhere. Power adapters ordered as parts are not supplied with a mains power cord, but the adapter almost certainly requires a 2 pin C7 cord and you will probably have loads of those already.
The travel power adapter you linked takes a C5 plug or plug adapter (3 pin) in at least one variant of that product. This is rather crazy because, as you can see, the US plug is a folding 2 pin affair. It is worth enquiring further to see if the interface between the country-specific cable or adapter and the main body of the adapter is 2 pin in the version currently on sale.

Thanks David_J_W,
I found one of the 742436-001 ("45 W HP Smart AC adapter, 2 prong") mentioned in the earlier post on e Bay, and the photo in the listing definitely showed a 2-pin "figure-of-8" interface on the power supply, which had a proper HP label on it. I've just ordered it. I'll see what shows up in the parcel next week, and I'll post a new message back here afterwards.
