You are correct.  I had the secure boot enabled and i was in UEFI mode.  I did as you said to put it into Legacy mode and disabled the secure boot then Windows 8.1 installed.  Now I have to  see if the bios update will work on this platform.  I will let you know shortly.

Hi Paul.  Ok. I finally got Windows 8.1 installed and I tried to install the sp66773.exe file.  I got the same error on Win 8.1 as I did on Win 10.  However, I redirected the extraction directory from %1%//sp66773 to c:\\users\me\Desktop and it extracted everything.  However, when Insyde tried to update the bios, it said that "This BIOS is not for your Notebook PC".  Is there a way to verify that the sp66773 was the correct version for my Envy m4 notebook pc?

Hi:

Just from what the release notes indicated on the link I posted.

Usually the release notes do not break down by specific models, just the general model series and whether the BIOS is for Intel or AMD platforms.

Try F.18.   At least it's newer than what your notebook has now.

HI Paul.  I agree.  I looked at the notes for the sp66773 and it says that it is for the Envy 4 and not the Envy m4.  The difference is that the Envy 4 I think is for tablets and the Envy m4 is for notebook pcs.

You mentioned the F.18 so I did find that one and installed it.  So At least I went from F.12 to F.18.  Its a big step so I appreciate all the help that you have given me.  I even learned something from you today in regards to the secure boot when I am installing Windows.  I will make sure that is disabled the next time I do my bios update.  What should the default secure boot setting be?  When do enable it?

Thanks again.

You're very welcome.

When you are ready to install W10/W11 go back and disable legacy mode/enable secure boot and boot your USB installation flash drive from the (U)EFI boot source.

I'll see if I can find a newer BIOS update for your notebook but don't get your hopes up.

Hi Paul.  Thank you for searching.  I already installed W10 on it in the past so I know it will work for W11 also.  I just need that last bios update that was made for it so that I can ensure that there are no firmware issues going forward.  You know W12 is supposed to be coming out later this year and W10 is stopping support on 10/14/2025 so I am trying to get this machine upto W11 at least with no issues.  I appreciate all your help.

Thanks again.

Hi:

As far as I can tell, F.18 was the last BIOS update HP released for your notebook, so hopefully W11 will work with that update.
