Hello there,
I'm looking to upgrade my ram size in my OMEN by HP - 15-ce054na Laptop.
I currently have an 8 GB ram and according to the HP rep over the phone, it's DDR4 2400mhz CL11 1.15volts ( i have no idea if this is correct... )
I was told by the HP rep that I would have to remove the 8 gigs and replace it with a new ram because pairing the ram wouldn't work since they are different voltages and CL ... unless I match them, which is extremely hard to do.
Is this correct?
The HP rep also told me that this laptop model is capable of supporting 2x16GB ram sticks... which is odd because I've been trying to find RAM on eBay and most sellers are telling me that my model only supports 2x8GB... I'm not quite sure who to believe. Does anyone know what my laptop model can hold?
Also, what's the best way of going about this upgrade? Should I just buy 1 x 8GB DDR4 Ram 2400 PC4-19200 1.2v CL17 SODIMM and pair it with what I already have in my system? Will this work? or should I purchase 2 x 8GB DDR4 Ram 2400 PC4-19200 1.2v CL17 SODIMM and replace my current ram completely?
Does anyone know if this laptop can support faster ram speeds? Something faster than 2400mhz?
Sorry for all these questions!
Thanks,

Hi:
All DDR4 memory is 1.2V.
You can just add an 8 GB DDR4-2400 memory chip to the existing one and have 16 GB.
Your notebook's processor can run memory at a max speed of 2400 MHz.
Any memory faster than that such as DDR4-2666 or 3200 MHz will just bridge to 2400 MHz.
Since your notebook has an i7-7700 HQ processor, it should support 2 x 16 GB of DDR4 memory.
Below is the link to the crucial memory report for your notebook. They have compatible memory for sale.

If you want to go with a 16 GB chip, this one should work.
Crucial 16GB DDR4-2400 SODIMM | CT16G4SFD824A | Crucial UK
Below is the link to the service manual...HP indicates the max memory is 2 x 8 GB.

Hello Paul,
Thank you so much for your response!
I'm a bit confused, HP and the website you linked me states that my computer can only handle 2 x 8GB, but you're telling me my processor can handle 2 x 16GB? So would you advise going for 2 x 16GB for an upgrade or should I just add an extra 8GB stick to be safe?
Thanks again for your help and time,
P

You're very welcome.
Theoretically, your notebook should support 2 x 16 GB of memory.
Unfortunately, I don't know of anyone who has installed 32 GB of memory in that model.
You can play it safe and add the 8 GB chip, or you could experiment by adding a 16 GB chip to the 8 GB chip, and if the notebook boots up, works fine, and reports 24 GB of memory, you can add the second 16 GB chip, and max it out to 32 GB.

Let me explain why I think 32 GB will work.
Your notebook has the i7-7700HQ processor, which according to the Intel specs, supports 64 GB of memory.
When you look at the other mobile Kaby Lake processors, they support 32 GB of memory.
I have provided comparison specs below for your notebook's processor and a non-HQ i7 Kaby Lake processor...
Intel® Product Specification Comparison
All notebooks that I know of that have Kaby Lake processors and two memory slots, support 2 x 8 GB of memory.
That is why I believe that yours will support double that, since the HQ processor supports twice the memory than the other processors do.
I think that HP and Crucial did not take that difference into account when they listed the memory specs.
One other thing you should take into consideration before plunking down 140 quid on memory...even if it works...
Go to your programs menu, Administrative Tools>Resource Monitor. Click on the memory tab and see how much free memory your notebook has with 8 GB installed.
Here is a screenshot of my desktop PC with an i5-4590 processor and 32 GB of memory.
Notice that I have more than 22 GB of memory lying around doing nothing.
I'm thinking that 16 GB of memory would have been fine for my needs.

Hi Paul,
Once again thank you very much for taking the time to elaborate.
I did what you told me and my Resource Monitor shows me 1455MB of ram available with a few applications open... like chrome with some tabs, whats app, word.. etc...
My main goal for this upgrade is so I can improve my gaming experience. I have the Nvidia GTX 1050Ti and it's only 4GB.
Currently, on some games, my FPS are quite low. Especially when I have my laptop connected to a 32inch 1440p 165hz monitor that I'm running at 120hz right now. (For some reason, when I run my display at 144hz the screen flickers fully black every so often a few times, especially when I get out of a game, I managed to fix this issue by changing my display to 120hz.. now I have no issue.. I'm not sure if adding more ram will let me play at 144hz)
Anyway, but maybe 32GB of ram is overkill?
Thanks again, Paul!
