HP OMEN AX203NA
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi i was hoping someone could help me with installation of M.2

I Bought the Omen from John lewis ax203na is the mdel number. I tried to install a toshiba THNSN5256GPU7 256GB in the empty M.2 Slot.

So in the BIOS i changed the secure boot off and Legacy mode enabled.

When i try and install windows on the drive for some reason the drive gets picked up as 4 partition with 0mb Available.

After a bit of too and fro i downloaded Ubuntu and managed to Format the SSD to NTFS.

Following this i installed Windows 10 but then when it gets to loading the windows for the first time i get Blue Screen showing there was a problem reading from the boot drive.

i Switch the laptop off remove and re insert the m.2 without the 1tb Hard drive still no good.

I thought ill try to install windows 1 more time and the boom the 0mb available with 4 partion show up again i dont get it.

Is this the SSD compatibility issue if so what is the compatible NVMe SSd for the above mentioned model

Help would be appreciated thanks

Hey there! @aaroh, Welcome to HP forums.

I understand you have issues booting from M.2 SDD.

Don't worry I will try to help you out.

Did you make any software or hardware changes on your PC apart from replacing the M.2 SDD?

Please try the steps recommended below.

Insert the flash drive which contains windows 10 to your PC.
power up your PC.
press F10 to get into BIOS
set BIOS to defaults, reboot
While the PC is restarting keep tapping the F10 key to boot into BIOS, Go to system configuration tab.
go to SATA Configuration
change all SSDs you have from Hard Disk Drive to Solid State Drive
press ESC, then select PCIe/PCI/PnP Configuration
select M.2 PCI-E 3.0 X4, change from default [Legacy] to [EFI]
select SLOT 7 PCI-E 3.0 X16, change from default [Legacy] to [EFI]
optionally, for better speed, select Onboard Video Option ROM, change from default [Legacy] to [EFI], this allows you to do the next step
press ESC, select Security, select CSM Support, change from default [Legacy] to [EFI]
press ESC, select Boot Settings, Boot Mode Select, change from [Dual] default to [UEFI]
press ESC, Save Changes and Reset
if you have no data on any drives, your system will likely automatically boot from the USB drive (if not, press F11 at boot time to manually select USB UEFI)
perform a normal Windows 10 installation, you'll have a GPT drive type, and if you clone it someday to a >2TB drive, it will still be bootable
for this drive, the speed is slower with Windows 10's Microsoft NVMe driver, from Samsung's SSD site, download and install the Toshiba NVMe Driver Installer, then reboot when prompted

change the SATA mode back to AHCI in PCH Storage and re-enable the Secure Boot in BIOS.

If you have done all the steps above and if you still get the warning

Windows cannot be installed to this disk. This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controllers are enabled in the computer's BIOS menu.

Try replacing the M.2 SDD with the part number listed below and check if it helps.

Generic SSD 256 GB 2280 M2 PCIe 3x4SS NVMe TLC TL 847109-008
Generic SSD 512 GB 2280 M2 PCIe 3x4SS NVMe TLC TL, not for products with AMD Radeon
hybrid graphics

Hope this helps!

Have a wonderful day ahead! 🙂
