Elitebook G3 840
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi I have a Elitebook G3 840 with a 256gb M.2 SSD(Samsung pm871a), I want upgrade to a M.2 NVME (Samsung pm981a), but every time I clone (Acronis) the original stick to the new one it doesn't seem to work or at least the new one will not boot.  Any ideas?

Best

Nick

Hi Erico, thank you for comments, much appreciated :0)

I'm now happy with PM871a setup coupled with 32gb RAM (hyperx) and 860 pro back up storage, so will stay with it.

Just a few clarifications on your latest email, I would be wary of crucial as website, click on ssd and it clearly shows nmve sticks as being compatible. They are also out of date as I'm running, recognised, 32gb ram on a g3 820.

I will say Elitebook G3/4 are great machines.

Thanks for all your help.

Unfortunately, The only upgrade path for your notebook will be to an M.2 SATA3 SSD with a higher capacity.

Your notebook's system board and BIOS do not have support for NVMe M.2 SSD products.

Hi Erico, thank for this, the laptop is a 840 G3 Elitebook Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-6200U CPU @ 2.30GHzis this the case for all these models?  Do you think I could just back up my programs and do fresh install of the NVME m.2 3x4 pm981?

I'll tell you why, I also have a HP EliteBook 820 G3 Notebook, with an Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-6300U CPU @ 2.40GHz and that upgraded no problem.  They also both take sata 2.5" SSDs' for storage, although it's a bit tight on the 820, it worked for both with Samsung SSD 860 PRO 512GB drives.

The chipset on the system board is an Intel Q170. The block diagram only shows PCie port configurations of  1x16 or 2x8 or 1x8+2x4.

It appears that currently only the higher tier enterprise notebooks have the NVMe drive interface

"Do you think I could just back up my programs and do fresh install of the NVME m.2 3x4 pm981?" No. I do not believe, based on the research I have done, that it will work.

The Samsung 860 Pro SSD that you mentioned is a SATA interface SSD.

Crucial memory shows only SATA/PCIe interface compatibility, not NVMe
