Envy 17-n106ng
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi all,

This is my first post, so thank you in advance for any reply.

I have a Hp Envy 17-n106ng and I would like to upgrade the M.2 SSD from 128Gb with a new Samsung 970 Evo M.2 SSD.

Is there any way to know if this is compatible with my laptop?

I have read that to reach the maximum speed, the laptop should support NVMe. Is there any way to check if my laptop is compatible?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Hi @discover86

Your notebook only supports M2 SATA3 SSDs such as the M2 Samsung 860evo. The PCIe NVMe SSD will not work in the notebook as there will be no PCIe lanes going to the slot.

Hope it helps,

David

Greetings!

Welcome to the HP Community. This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips to your technical queries. I have reviewed your post and I understand, you are trying to install a solid state drive.

Don't worry, I'm here to help!

Yes, your computer does support SSD. You can install the SSD with storage capacity greater than or equal to 128 GB. For more details, please refer to page# 2 of the Service Guide.

There's an m.2 slot for the SSD. You should be able to connect the SSD without any issues. Refer to page# 51 from the same service guide for instructions to install the SSD.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Hi Asmita,

thank you very much for your reply!

I read the manual, but there is no reference to a NVMe support.

Shouldn't this be explicitly written on the manual, in order to work?

thank you again for your help

David,

sorry to bother again, could I please ask if also the HP ENVY 17-r102nl is not compatible with a NVMe  M.2 SSD?

Thank you in advance for your help

No problem Antonio.

That notebook will also only support an M2 SATA3 SSD, not PCIe NVMe. This will be the same for the whole 17-rXXX (you can replace the XXX with any number) series.

Usually the newer PCIe SSDs will be available with notebooks which have 7th generation or later Intel Core processors (however not always).

Let me know if you need further info.

All the best,

David
