Hi:
Whoever informed you of that was incorrect.
Here's the problem...on some of the older model notebooks such as yours where a M.2 slot is referenced in the service manual, the only notebooks that came with a M.2 slot were those that came with a M.2 SSD from the HP factory.
Yours did not.
When I answer questions such as yours, I first look at chapter 3 of the service manual which has the list of parts.
http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c05227786
As you can see on page 26, item 13, an additional part is required.
(13) Solid-state drive board 850946-001. As you can see, that is the M.2 slot board that is missing from your notebook.
You would also need the screws to secure the part to the motherboard.
When I see info like that, I always suggest to the forum member asking the question, to first open up the notebook and confirm the slot is there before buying a SSD.
What can you do now?
See if you can find the part you need, and the screws to hold it down, or return the M.2 SSD or exchange it for a 2.5" SSD and replace your notebook's mechanical hard drive with a SSD.
