M2 SSD on hp envy 17-r101nn

Hello.

I have a hp envy 17-r101nn with the default hardware cfg: the 1TB SSHD, and so on. I've seen that i have slot for M2 ssd and bought a Samsung 860 EVO Sata M.2, model name: MZ-N6E250. But the system does not see it at all, nor in bios nor in windows. I even disconnected the SSHD and still the same result.

Does anyone know what is the cause of this?

Yesa if you look at the Service Manual, M.2 SSD is only available on systems with i7 and GTX video and yours does not have GTX video:

So your motherboard is a different part number and the factory may have put the M.2 slot on but it is not activated internally.

So our situation is at follows: We paid for something that was not ment to be used in the firs place? Because, since that piece of equipment is there, i am 100% positive that HP made me pay for it.... And now i also bought a freaking SSD M.2. Excelent. Long live malefic capitalism.

Can't this be "activated" somehow?

The slot is hidden under the motherboard and was not advertised. So hard to say how you were misled. Once someone takes on the mindset you exhibit here, I have learned there is nothing to be said. Sorry for your troubles and good luck to you.

Well, i simply opened up the laptop, saw it has a M2 SATA slot for a 2280 SSD M.2 right next to the SSHD it has equipped by default. And i ordered the SSD 🙂 And now i'm in this situation. Thank you for the help, i appreciate it. Good luck to you too.

I believe that slot is for WWAN. The M.2 SSD slot is on the backside of the motherboard.

I think we were both wrong. The manual states:

Single HDD conƭJuratLons
Support for the following single hard drive conƭgurations

SSHD conƭgurations
● 1-TB 5400-rpm 9.5–mm SSHD w/8 GB NAND

● 1-TB + 256 GB M.2 SATA SSD (TLC)
● 4-TB: 2-TB (5400-rpm) x 2
SSD conƭgurations
, (available for i7 + GTX PCA)
● 512 GB M.2 SATA SSD (TLC)
● 128 GB M2 SATA-3 (TLC)
● 128 GB M2 SATA-3 (TLC) value

This means that i can install a 256 GB M2 SATA SSD on this system while also having the default SSHD

Below, you can see the slot, it's not on the back.

I'm thinking of getting the notebook to a service and see if the slot is actually functional.

Yeah that is definitely not a WWAN port and the Manual at no place clearly depicts that. We do have another parallel thread gong on a closely related model where the User says he put an M.2 SATA in that port and it did not work. I also tried to tell him it was a WWAN port based on the Manual saying the port is on the backside of the motherboard, and not having seen an actual image of it until now. Just goes to show there is no subsitute for hands on. Right now I do not really know what to tell you to do. Understand if you get an M.2 SSD it might not work but if you decide to risk it please post the results back here.

Yes, the hardware is there, the circuits seem to be in order but it has been limited from bios, for some reason. There is a chance of this to work by "modifying" the bios but that implies risks like: a malfunctioning GPU or even the entire system to stop working. I am not going to do that. Anyone wants to buy a Samsung V-NAND SSD 860 EVO SATA M.2? 🙂
