Hi there,
I recently purchased a Pavilion X360 14'' (model number ek2002nl) with HP MPP 2.0 .
Everything works and all but there is a big problem with the pen.
It starts writing before its tip touches the screen (a good 4mm away, making it impossible to use!)
I thought maybe its an OS issue and I booted a live Ubuntu 24. Same issue there as well.
To investigate further, I logged the pressure data from `xinput query-state <id>` and it seems that the device reports a pressure of 600 to 700 units when the pen hovers (or is in proximity without touching the screen).
The webpage of the notebook states that MPP 2.0 is compatible but it is for sure either incompatible or defective.
Can you please advise me on what to do?
Do I need to return the device? or is it a known issue with a solution?

Hi @Snowy72,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It seems like your HP Pavilion X360 and the HP MPP Pen 2.0 are having a sensitivity or calibration issue, and it's affecting the pen's functionality across different operating systems, suggesting a hardware-related problem rather than software.
Steps you can take:
Firmware/Driver Update: Ensure both your Pavilion X360 and the pen are using the latest firmware and drivers. HP provides regular updates that may address compatibility and performance issues. You can do this via:
- Windows Update (Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update)
- HP Support Assistant to check for any hardware updates.
- Check for BIOS updates for your Pavilion X360, as sometimes these updates contain improvements for peripheral devices like the MPP Pen.
Recalibration (Windows): You can try recalibrating the pen input manually:
- Go to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Tablet PC Settings.
- Click Calibrate under the Display tab and follow the instructions for recalibration.
Testing on a Different Device: If you have access to another device that supports MPP 2.0, try the pen on that device to confirm if the issue lies with the pen itself or your Pavilion X360.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Thank you for your kind reply. To be honest I am disappointed, a brand-new device should not have these issues.
I checked the BIOS and it is the latest version available for EK2002nl. (F5, Rev A)
Unfortunately, I don't have any other laptops/tablets that support MPP.
I am installing a Win11 copy to do the calibration process you kindly pointed out.
Which pens are compatible with this device?
Maybe the screen is calibrated for an older stylus?
How about HP Pen MPP 1.51 ?

Hi @Snowy72,
Thank you for your response,
I understand your disappointment with your new HP Pavilion x360 14 (ek2002nl) and the compatibility issues with the MPP Pen 2.0. Since you've already checked the BIOS and confirmed that it’s up to date, let's focus on addressing the pen compatibility and calibration.
Stylus Compatibility
- Your HP Pavilion x360 14 supports Microsoft Pen Protocol (MPP), which is a common standard across HP devices. The MPP Pen 2.0 should, in theory, be compatible with your device. However, it's possible that some calibration or firmware updates specific to the pen might improve its performance.
- The HP Pen MPP 1.51 should also be compatible with your Pavilion x360, as it uses an earlier version of the MPP standard. However, the MPP Pen 2.0 offers improvements in precision, pressure sensitivity, and overall performance compared to the older MPP 1.51, so the screen is not specifically calibrated for the older stylus.
Screen Calibration
If the issue is persistent after you install Windows 11 and perform the pen calibration, it might indicate either a hardware issue or a problem with the pen itself. Given that you've mentioned the MPP 2.0 is not working as expected, testing with the HP Pen MPP 1.51 could be a helpful next step to rule out pen-specific issues.
If the MPP 1.51 works better, it may indicate a compatibility or firmware issue with the MPP 2.0 that could be resolved with future updates.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Ok, with Win11 installed, I performed the calibration process under Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Tablet PC Settings.
it didn't help as it did not affect the pressure sensed by the device. The pen still starts writing from 4 to 5mm away from the display!
I guess I have to start the procedure to return the device (its been 10 days or so since the purchase). This is unusable.

Here is a video of the problem. As you can see, the pen starts writing before its tip touches the screen glass. So, writing a simple dot on the screen becomes impossible.

Do I need to contact the HP seller that I have bought the device from to return it within 30 days?

I bought a third party MPP 2.0 pen (Lenovo Precision Pen 2) and it works perfectly without the mentioned problems.
My brand new HP Pen MPP 2.0 is faulty. I assume the warranty should cover it, right? I still have the box, pen, its tips and paper work.
How can I initiate the warranty procedures?

Hi Snowy72,
I have exactly the same issue with the HP MPP 2.0 pen and HP Pavilion x360 2 in 1 laptop (ek1000na).
I am awaiting a replacement pen to be sent but if that is the same then we would look to get one of the Lenovo Precision Pen 2 pens you said worked.
How did you determine that it would be compatible with you laptop or did you just take a punt? I can’t find anything online that says which laptops are compatible with which pens.
I hope you got your refund as I agree the one I have is not fit for purpose!
Any advice will be appreciated, thanks.
