I am looking to add more memory and/or upgrade the cpu.
Not sure if I can add more memory (currently have 8gb) or not - one web site seems to suggest not? (see second link below)
Any suggestions on how to make the laptop perform better? (is it possible to upgrade the cpu and if so...recommendation?)

Your notebook only has one memory slot.
Your notebook already has the maximum memory supported since it has 8 GB.
You cannot upgrade the CPU since it is an integral part of the motherboard.
Below is the link to the service manual:
See chapter 1 for the memory information.

You're very welcome.
Unfortunately, I don't since your notebook already comes with a M.2 SATA SSD, or I would have suggested that if it only came with a 2.5" mechanical hard drive to replace it with a 2.5" SSD.
You can't upgrade the processor but the A12-9700P processor was the top-of-the-line in the AMD 7th generation processor series.
I just wonder if even though the specs indicate that the max memory is 1 x 8 GB, if a 16 GB memory chip would work.
Just as an experiment, run this command and let me know what the result is:
1. In the search box, search for cmd and click Run as administrator.
This will open the command prompt.
2. Once command prompt is opened, type wmic memphysical get maxcapacityEx and press the enter key.
There, it will show the maximum RAM capacity your PC's motherboard can support.
The capacity is shown as Kilobytes, so you have to convert it to Gigabytes by dividing the number provided in the report by 1,048,576.
If the report indicates 33,xxx,xxx, then there is a good chance that a single 16 GB DDR4-2400 CL17 memory chip would work.

Whoa!
Yes, that is what the report indicates.
If you want to take a gamble on it, see if this 16 GB memory chip works:
This should automatically bridge to 2133 MHz or 1866 MHz whichever speed your notebook's processor runs the memory at.
