HP ENVY x360 15.6 inch 2-in-1 Laptop PC 15-es0000 (268U1AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

My Envy works just fine under low to medium workload, however, when it reaches a high workload (e.g. playing a game via my eGPU Docking Station or just generally doing a lot of stuff at once) and the CPU load reaches 100%, it *always* throttles down to under 2GHz. The usual speed is about 3.6GHz. It quite often gets lower than that; I even had clock speeds of about 1.2-1.3GHz. Obviously, this isn't exactly helping the framerate/overall speed.

I'm kind of assuming that it's a thermal-ish problem, but the CPU barely reaches 70°C, even when it's at 100% workload. I put some better thermal paste on it, since I heard that the original paste by HP is kind of **bleep**ty, and I'm thinking of buying a Laptop Cooler (y'know, these stands with fans below them).

However, is there any other way to reduce the CPU throttle? I feel like it's *really* limiting the laptop's capabilities. It's a great laptop for a decent price, this is the only problem I'm having with it.

Thanks a lot in advance!

Hello @Apfelbomber

Sorry to hear that you are having problems ... and I would like to help you.

(1) Update BIOS

HP Firmware Pack (Intel Processors)

F.12 Rev.A16.1 MBMar 4, 2022Download

Quote: " Provides improved system stability. - Provides enhanced security. NOTE: HP strongly recommends transitioning promptly to this updated BIOS version which supersedes all previous releases."

Why should you install the update ?

Updating the BIOS is recommended as standard maintenance of the computer. It can also help resolve the following issues:

  • An available BIOS update resolves a specific issue or improves computer performance.
  • The current BIOS does not support a hardware component or a Windows upgrade.
  • HP Support recommends installing a specific BIOS update.

(2Reboot and test again ...

Thank you. I updated the BIOS and tried again. Sadly, it didn't change a whole lot. A bit, yeah, but not a lot. It's still throttling massively.

However, I noticed something - in my laptop, there's a plastic cover next to my fan that looks like it's a placeholder for a second fan. I found out that in AMD models, there's a better cooling system.

Is there any way to buy and install that in this laptop?

Hello @Apfelbomber

In your case: Service is required !

Use high quality thermal paste !

- Thermal paste for CPU GPU and bridges should be renewed
- The function of the fan(s) must be checked
- General cleaning ...

If you can't do that, you should have it serviced by a professional notebook (chip level) repair store.

Thank you again. However, I've already done all of that. I replaced the thermal paste, I cleaned it's insides (though, since I only had it for about 4 months, it wasn't that dirty) and checked if the fan works. Everything seems okay.

I just don't get why it throttles that much...

Throttle depends on sensor and bios

If the sensor is no longer measuring correctly, you cannot solve the problem completely.
