I know the Compaq NC6220 is old.  Everywhere when you read about what is the maximum RAM that can be installed in a nc6220 they say 2GB.  But they are wrong.

I have tested 1GB, 2GB, and 4GB DDR2 SODIMMs in both of the memory slots. The results show that the max is 3GB RAM.

You can install a 1GB and a 2GB SODIMM and it will boot & run.  I have used 3GB for the past 4 years with no RAM issues. Yes, you should install like-sized modules but the extra 1GB RAM outweighs any loss of RAM speed

I have a 2GB module under the keyboard and a 1GB in the back.

If you install two 2GB modules the computer will not POST.  Ditto for the 4 GB modules - 1 in any slot and no POST.

I have 4 OSs on the 320GB WD hard drive - PC-DOS 7 Revision 1, Windows 2000 SP4, Windows XP SP3, and Linux Mint 19.3 32bit Cinnamon. I use Linux Mint to browse the net with a current supported browser - FireFox.  XP is for games and DOS is for development-  WIn2k is for fun.

I did have a 500GB SSD installed but DOS would not boot the SSD so I went back to the 320GB WD hard drive.
