I want to put 2 x 8 GB sodimms in this laptop. The HP OScheck app says I can do that, but the specification sheet says it is only upgradable to 8 GB, meaning 2 x 4 GB. So what is it?

Thanks Huffer. I have one more question: The Crucial app tells me I need low voltage ram, but in the spec sheet from HP there is no reference  to that being required. Should I buy normal voltage or low voltage sodimms?

The specified memory is actually 1.5 volt but Crucial will sell you 1.35 volt because there is a lot more of that in the pipeline and low-voltage is capable of running at either 1.35 or 1.5 volts. Just do not mix a 1.5 volt and a 1.35 volt module. So not to dodge the question but the answer is if you can find purely 1.5 volt get it; but if it's hard to find or more expensive get the 1.35 volt stuff just use only the 1.35 volt stuff.
