Hi there,
I'm trying to figure out what's the maximum amount of RAM that I can install in a 3P315ES.
I searched the web and I find conflicting information. Sometimes 16GB, sometimes 8GB.
What's correct?
In the knowledge base article I cannot see the Ryzen 5 that I am confident comes with this model, but 16GB max RAM:
https://support.hp.com/de-de/document/c06195738/
But then in the support section I cannot find it at all when entering the product number:
https://support.hp.com/us-en/search?q=3p315es&filter=&origin=pdp
The only place I could find that appears to have up to date info only has rudimentary specs...
https://www8.hp.com/de/de/laptops/product-details/product-specifications/24381324
I did however find a HP datasheet on a price comparison website that states max 8GB.
Can anyone point me in a direction?
Cheers,
Pete

Hi:
Below is the link to the service manual for the 255 G7.
http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c06208876
Chapter 1 has the memory upgrade info.
Models with the Ryzen processors have two memory slots.
The manual can't be right.
If the PC has two memory slots and one slot can take an 8 GB memory chip, how can it be that the second slot cannot take any memory?
If one slot can take 8 GB, it goes to reason that the second slot can take an 8 GB memory chip as well.

HP 255 G7 is a series of many models/products. They all use AMD processors. Configuration options

Not all machines support 16GB (max) Many of them support 8GB (max) therefore depending on your model/product machine can only has 8GB.
You are saying your machine uses Ryzen 5 3500U which is a newer model/product. Most likely it supports 16GB of RAM. You can use a tool called CPU-Z to check existing RAM and work this out.
Regards.

Hi Paul,
Thank you for your reply. I totally agree with your reasoning. I think a BIOS/chipset that doesn't support 16GB is... old. But, I won't bet 400 Euros on it, hence the question.
The manual in your link is even more confusing: non-user upgradeable max 8GB, but a slot. Either there is a slot or it is non-user upgradeable.
Strange.
Thanks anyway.

You're very welcome.
400 Euros? You can get compatible16 GB memory kit a whole lot cheaper than that in Germany.
https://www.crucial.de/memory/ddr4/ct2k8g4sfra266
The US site indicates that memory kit is 100% compatible with the HP 255 G7's with the Ryzen processors...
https://www.crucial.com/memory/ddr4/ct2k8g4sfra266/ct18807398
The non-user upgradeable info means HP wants the memory upgrades be performed by an authorized service center.
You can read the manual, chapter 6 for the memory removal and replacement procedure.

Thanks, Banhien. I am aware that there are models that just have soldered RAM and no free slot. That'd be the max 8GB configuration. But there seems to be a consensus for this model that there is a free slot... and I agree with you that it will probably support 16GB.
Is there no product database at HP anywhere, where this type of basic info can be found out?
I haven't got the laptop in front of me. I haven't bought it yet. So I cannot use the CPU-Z software (which I actually did not know about). Thanks!

There is also a support video that shows two memory slots...

Thanks everyone for your help! Some things will remain a mystery. It is great to see that there are people that willingly spend their free time to answer random upgrade questions!
I just cannot get myself to buy a laptop for my nephew that I know will be essentially unusable with shared graphics memory and an uncertain memory upgrade... unless I get him to use the terminal right from the start 🤔
Who needs GUIs anyway?

Anytime.
Glad to have been of assistance.
I have two HP 255 G7's that I bought on eBay for approximately 100 Euros each. It was a great deal.
I bought them for my grand daughters. I figured if they damaged them, it would be no big loss.
The ones I got have the weak A4-9125 processor but they did come with 256 GB SSD's and 8 GB of memory.
Unfortunately the A4 models only have one memory slot, so the memory can't be upgraded.
The model is adequate for internet browsing, light office productivity and whatnot,
The 255 G7 Ryzen model did get a good video review...
