Spectre x360 - 13-4003dx
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

I want to upgrade the SSD in my HP Spectre x360 13-4003dx.  Will this model accept a 1 TB drive, or only 512 GB? HP doesn't make this clear in the online specs.

There is what HP offered as optional equipment and then there is what the laptop will accept. The Manual only speaks of equipment HP actually supplied to the market. You apparently have already looked at the manual:

Manual

Oddly, the Manual says the laptop will support either a pcie or SATA M.2 disk but it appears only SATA disks were offered as optional equipment.

See the parts list on p. 20. The M.2 connection and SATA bus has no inherent capacity limit.

So yes the computer will accept as large an M.2 disk as you can find on the market and specifically this 1 TB Samsung Evo 850 will work fine.
