HP Envy dv7-7250US
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My HP Envy dv7-7250US internal 1TB hard drive is starting to make noises and I want to replace it.  I was wondering if this laptop will support newer, larger, faster hard drives (e.g. 2TB, 7200rpm, 6GB/sec, SATA1, SATA2 SATA3, etc)?  I know what the options were when the machine was purchased.  I also know that it takes a 2.5" internal drive of varying thicknessew.  But, I have not been able to find any information on the maximum SUPPORTED capacity of the hard drive.  Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

You're very welcome.

There should be no capacity limitation in the BIOS that would preclude a 2 TB HDD from working.

Theoretically, since the notebook should have a UEFI BIOS, and Windows is installed in UEFI mode and if the drive is formatted in GPT, drives in excess of 2 TB should also work.

Hi:

It should be able to handle a 2 TB SATA III hard drive...They now make them thin enough to fit inside most notebooks...

I can't find any with a 7,200 RPM spindle speed though.   This one is only 7.0mm thick.

Thanks for the reply and information.  I was really just trying to make sure there was nothing on the motherboard or in the bios of this laptop that precluded a hard drive larger than the 1TB maximum option listed in the documentation.  The  laptop will take up to a 12.7mm thick 2.5" drive.  So, it is really the capacity limitation that I was asking about.  Your reply seemed to focus on the physical size of the drive.  Can I also assume that you are sure about the capacity of the drive being ok for the HP Envy dv7-7250US?  I just want to be sure before I order something.

You are definitely correct about the spindle speed.  I guess all of the 7200rpm models I looked at were 1TB.  The larger ones still seem to be 5400rpm.

Thanks again for your reply.
