I need a new main hard drive in my dv7-2177cl laptop. I talked to someone at HP today (I thought it was tech support, they said sales?) and got two different answers (both wrong, I belive), and a promise to email more info which I never received.
The current (failing) HDD is 500GB (Sata). I was told first that up to 750GB was ok but a 1 TB drive would have to be external only, and then told by someone else that I should use same capacity drive only.
MY QUESTION: Is there any technical limitation to prevent me from replacing my old 500GB drive with a 1 TB drive?
I have looked at the user guide and tech specs and not found any guidelines regarding max HDD limit.
(Here is my product page, which links to user guide also: https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-pavilion-dv7-2100-entertainment-notebook-pc-series/3945156/m... )
Thanks in advance for any help!

Hi,
In therory the number is quite large but you can use 1TB each. Your machine DOES suport 2 HDD's and you can have total of 2TB of storage.
Supports all Serial ATA (SATA) 9.5-mm, 6.35-cm (2.50-inch) hard drives
Supports up to 2 hard drives
If you wish to install the seond HDD, you need the following part
Secondary hard drive cover part # 518164-001
