So I bought the 15-ef2126wm and now (about 18 months later) the hard drive it came with (1 TB, M.2 SSD) failed.  As I have to replace it, I am thinking of getting a larger size drive.  What is the largest size drive I can get that would work?  And, besides being an M.2 SSD, is there anything else I need to know to ensure it's compatible with this laptop model?

Hi:

Below is the link to the user guides page for your notebook.

HP 15.6 inch Laptop PC 15-e2000 IDS Base Model - Setup and User Guides | HP® Support

Chapter 1 of the maintenance and service guide (which is for the older 15-ef0xxx models series) lists the NVMe drive capacities HP installed in the model series.

That is normally just what HP offered in the model series, not the maximum capacity supported.

However, no one can tell you exactly how large a capacity SSD you can install because there is no software that I know of that is available to provide that information.

Theoretically, the sky's the limit as long as you install a single-sided SSD.

The Crucial SSD report for your notebook indicates that they sell NVMe SSD's up to 4 TB in storage capacity.

Your PC's M.2 slot is PCIe Gen 3.0 and if you plan on buying a 2 TB or greater capacity NVMe SSD most of those nowadays are PCIe Gen 4.0.

Those will work fine but will not run at their maximum advertised read/write speeds from a Gen 3 SSD slot.

This chart shows the maximum theoretical transfer speeds for the various PCIe generation slots.
