Pavilion 15z-eh000#ABA
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Having ordered a  2021 red tag special 15z-eh000 (9YV59AV) with AMD Ryzen 7 4700u, I've decided to upgrade the RAM from 8GB (2x4GB DDR4-3200) to 16GB or even 32GB (if possible).   I've now spoken to three separate HP tech support folks regarding what combinations of upgrade memory will work with this notebook, and have gotten three different answers:

  1.  Not possible to upgrade - the memory chips are soldered to the motherboard on this model and  *no slots* are available
  2.  Possible to upgrade - the first 8GB is soldered to the motherboard, but there are also two vacant slots into which you can insert an additional two  DDR4-3200 4GB modules for a total of 16GB, which is the max.
  3.  Possible to upgrade - no memory is soldered.  There are two slots each of which is currently occupied by a 4GB DDR4-3200 module.  You can replace each of those with an 8GB DDR4-3200 module for a total of 16GB, which is the max.
  4.  Some owners have suggested that you can even stuff the two slots with 16GB modules.

So the question is:  which (if any of these) is correct?  I gather that model no. does not uniquely determine the motherboard used without having a serial no.  However, I do not have a serial no. yet, as the machine has yet to be built.  However, the tech support people claimed to be able to determine which motherboard is used from my order no.

Thanks for the  help - Rob.

It is a CTO machine, why not order the right one now because it is cheaper and no headache

                     https://store.hp.com/us/en/pdp/hp-pavilion-laptop-15z-eh000-touch-optional-9yv59av-1

Just simply    CUSTOMIZE & BUY    and you will get the whole picture.

Anyway, for RAM, you can use 2 x 8GB (16GB) for sure. RAM is not soldered to the system board.

And yes, you can upgrade to 32GB (2 x16GB) using

Why not just offer 32GB as an option I have wasted money on the 16GB configuration. I would have preferred to have had my laptop configured with 32GB from the factory.  These things drive me crazy. I do appreciate the original poster for sharing this for everyone else to find.

Just to follow up on my experience, I did receive the machine with the minimal configuration (two 4K memory modules) a few days after the estimated date, and had no trouble replacing them with two 8K Crucial Ballistic modules (I only need 16GB for my application).   Also upgraded the SSD to 512GB w/o problem, and upgraded the OS to Win10 Pro (to get remote desktop).   Thus far, the machine has been quite reliable.  Only bother is that the function keys are not dedicated.
