Memory card reader is not reading cards. The computer dings to acknowledge a card is there but it does not show up in file explorer. This happened from one day to the next, no drops or any other impacts to the laptop. My usb card reader works fine.

@300leftybowler

Thank you for responding,

It's great to have you back 😉

If you've created an image to update the BIOS and it doesn't work,

It means your BIOS wasn't changed, so you could attempt a BIOS recovery as mentioned in the same article, using the Windows+B combination.

If that doesn't work, you don't have to recover as it's either on the best available version or the rollback isn't working,

In such cases, you might want to either get yourself a replacement card reader from HP or if the product is not within warranty anymore, simply get yourself an external card reader for way cheaper.

@300leftybowler

Thank you for joining HP Forums.

I'll be glad to help you 🙂

As I understand the memory card reader isn't working,

No worries, as I'll be glad to help you, that said, I'll need a few more details to dissect your concern & provide an accurate solution:

Did you reinstall the drivers for the card reader?

While you respond to that, here are a few steps that should help:

Download the drivers from the HP website: Click here to find and install.

If the issue persists, Click here to download the SD Card Reader driver from the manufacturer site.

Note: The above website is Realtek. Download and install US2 or US1 and check which one works for your Notebook.

Download and save the SD Card Reader driver for Windows 8.1-64bit and before you install it follow the below instructions.

1.) Right Click on the Setup (.exe) file and click on properties.

2.) In the properties window, click on Compatibility Tab.

3.) Put a check mark next to "Run this program in compatibility mode for" and select Windows 7 from the drop down.

4.) Click Apply and Ok.

5.) Double click on the Setup (.exe) file to install the driver.

6.) Restart the Notebook.

Let me know how that pans out

I hope you have a good day ahead,

And Feel free to ask any other queries as  well,

Considering, this forum has some of the best people in the world available and ready to help.

The suggestions did not resolve the issue. In the card reader properties under events it shows Device PCI

\VEN_10EC&DEV_529&SUBSYS_8130103C&REV_01\4&272a3b7e&0&0015 requires further installation.

Is where my problem comes from ?

Hi @300leftybowler,

Thank you for your reply, I'll be more than glad to help you.

I understand that the issue still persists after following the steps provided in the previous interaction.

It looks like you were interacting with @Riddle_Decipher, but he is out of the office today so I'll take over from here.

This issue could occur if the BIOS is not updated.

Please follow the link to update the BIOS from the link: https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers

Let me know if this works.

You have a good day ahead.

@300leftybowler

Thank you for replying with this detailed response 😉

I appreciate your time and efforts,

Here are the steps to recover or rollback to the previous working build of BIOS:

Step 1: Recover the BIOS using a key press combination

Many HP notebook computers have an emergency BIOS recovery feature that allows you to recover and install the last known good version of the BIOS from the hard drive, as long as the hard drive remains functional. This emergency recovery feature is separate from the BIOS and is designed to work in the event of a catastrophic BIOS failure.

When I made the image on the flash drive the update option was grayed out saying BIOS update is not allowed on this device due to a security policy set by the BIOS administrator, how do I change that so I can downgrade to original BIOS.

Thank You for all your help so far.
