I have an HP 17-y014cy laptop that I'm thinking about upgrading and setting up for a friend. It currently has 12gb of RAM (1 4gb and 1 8gb stick, which seems like an odd combination). I'm thinking about a paired 16 or 32gb kit.
According to the specs, it requires DDR4-2133 SDRAM, but it doesn't say of it's ECC or not.
I'm looking at something like a Corsair Vengeance Performance SODIMM Memory 32GB (2x16GB) DDR4 3200MHz CL22 Unbuffered kit. https://www.amazon.com/Corsair-Vengeance-Performance-Unbuffered-Generation/dp/B08GSTF5NJ
Or a Corsair Vengeance Performance SODIMM Memory 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 3200MHz CL22 Unbuffered kit. https://www.amazon.com/Corsair-Vengeance-Performance-Unbuffered-Generation/dp/B08BLVHWXD
I know putting faster RAM in won't make the RAM faster, but it should clock down to what the MB is running, correct?
Other options might be a Timetec 16GB KIT(2x8GB) DDR4 2133MHz PC4-17000 Non-ECC Unbuffered 1.2V CL15 1Rx8 Single Rank 260 Pin SODIMM kit. https://www.amazon.com/Timetec-PC4-17000-Unbuffered-Notebook-Computer/dp/B07D2W7D9R
Or a 32GB (2x16GB) DDR4-2666MHz PC4-21300 1.2V SODIMM Laptop Memory by NEMIX RAM kit. https://www.amazon.com/2x16GB-DDR4-2666MHz-PC4-21300-SODIMM-Notebook/dp/B07X22CRQ7
I just put that Nemix kit in my Acer Nitro 5 and it's working flawlessly.
I see single rank and dual rank. Will one or the other make a different. Or does anyone have any other recommendations?
Thank you.

Hi:
Al HP consumer class notebooks use non-ECC, unbuffered memory.
Chapter 1 of the service manual indicates the max memory is 2 x 8 GB:
HP Notebook PC (AMD)Models: HP 17-y000 – 17-y099 Maintenance and Service Guide
Before buying 2 x 16 GB of memory, I recommend that you run this command to see if the notebook will support 32 GB.
1. In the search box, search for cmd and click Run as administrator.
This will open the command prompt.
2. After the command prompt is opened, type wmic memphysical get maxcapacityEx and press the enter key.
There, it will show the maximum RAM capacity your PC's motherboard can support.
The capacity is shown as Kilobytes, so you have to convert it to Gigabytes by dividing the number provided in the report by 1,048,576.
I'd go with two of these if you want DDR4-3200 memory.
Dual ranked memory normally offers the best overall compatibility.
