When replacing the HDD in my laptop I'm thinking of upgrading the memory.  It currently has 12 GB DDR3L-1600 SDRAM, one 4 GB and one 8 GB module.   I can go up to 16GB by replacing the 4GB module with 8GB.  I need some guidance on my options.

  • The laptop was purchased in 2016, yes, its older but it suits my needs and I have no good reason to replace it.  However, since 2016 I know there have been advances in memory technology.    I already know I can't use DDR4 but are there any related to DDR3L that I can take advantage of.
  • If the answer to the above question is no, then can I just pick up another 8GB DDR3L-1600 SDRAM module or do I have to replace both modules to avoid compatibility issues?
  • Are all DDR3L-1600 SDRAM modules created equal or are there certain specs I need to be aware of?

Thanks

Hi:

There aren't any better/faster DDR3L memory chips you can install.

This 8 GB memory chip should work fine with the other 8 GB chip currently installed.

If for some unforeseen reason it doesn't then you can purchase a second memory chip at that time.
