Could you please tell me the maximum memory I can install in this laptop: HP 17-cp0009na. The specifications in HP Support Assistance on the system state that it is using type an 8Gb Samsung DDR4 3200 (although specification in website state DDR 2400...)
I am interested in installing a 16Gb stick of RAM in the second slot. Could you please advise if any DDR4 3200 is suitable or there are any other limitations that I need to look for in purchasing the RAM.
Also, could you please advise if a further SSD can be installed as well in the laptop apart from the currently installed NVMi SSD (which has the operating system and applications on it) or, do I need to swap out the existing 256Mb hard drive for a large one (I assume I can backup/clone the existing one to the new). Many thanks in advance.

If you plan on moving that drive in the future to another PC that supports Gen 4 NVMe SSD's the WD Black SN 750 would be fine.
It will run at the max speed allowed from your notebook's Gen 3 M.2 slot.
Otherwise, you can save a few quid and buy the WD Blue SN570 which is a Gen 3 SSD.

Hi:
According to both the service manual (chapter 1) and the crucial memory report for your notebook, it only supports 2 x 8 GB of DDR4-3200 memory.
Maintenance and Service Guide (hp.com)
HP - Compaq HP 17-cp0000 | Memory RAM & SSD Upgrades | Crucial UK
I'm assuming that it must not have one of the Ryzen 5xxx processors, if the 3200 MHz memory is only running at 2400 MHz.
You would want this 8 GB memory chip....
Crucial 8GB DDR4-3200 SODIMM | CT8G4SFRA32A | Crucial UK
According to the service manual, there is only one slot for a M.2 SSD so you would need to replace the existing NVMe SSD with one having a larger storage capacity.

Many thanks for the quick response!
The CPU is an AMD Ryzen 3 3250U. I've just on the performance and it indeed states to memory is running at 2400Mhz even though the RAM installed is 3200Mhz.
In the same section (chapter 1) it does state for a second drive possibility (combination of hard drive + SSD) so I'm a little confused now... Is there space for a physical HDD? I may just add the memory first and then once open I can see...

You're very welcome.
If that is the case, then I wonder why the Crucial memory report indicates the max is only 16 GB.
The notebook should support up to 2 x 16 GB of memory with a Ryzen 3 3250U processor.
You can do this to see how much memory your notebook can actually support:
1. In the search box, search for cmd and click Run as administrator.
This will open the command prompt.
2. Once command prompt is opened, type wmic memphysical get maxcapacityEx and hit enter.
There, it will show the maximum RAM capacity your PC's motherboard can support.
The capacity is shown as Kilobytes, so you have to convert it to Gigabytes by dividing the number provided in the report by 1,048,576.
If you find that your notebook can support 32 GB of memory, then this would be the 16 GB chip you want:
Crucial 16GB DDR4-3200 SODIMM | CT16G4SFRA32A | Crucial UK
In regard to the notebook having space for a 2.5" drive...adding one is normally easier said than done.
You will need to open up the notebook and check to see that the parts are there to add a 2.5" drive.
Usually, they are not unless the notebook came with a dual drive configuration from the factory.
If the parts are not there, none are listed in chapter 3 of the manual.
Only the hard drives are listed and not illustrated.

That's great - thank you very much!
The result came back with 32Gb max allowed so I'll get the 16Gb Crucial RAM to have a total of 24Gb. This should make a large difference in the system performance.
I'll most likely swap over the M.2 drive in that case in the near future for a 1Tb.

Just one more thing... For the M.2 drive are all compatible or are there any limitations based on with HP internally or the Ryzen processor?
I was looking at this one...
