Looks difficult to upgrade the memory. Is it even possible?

It is a 17t-s000, which I also have not heard about before.

17t-s000 Service manual

Memory upgrade on p. 36. It "only" requires removal of the back cover, not removal of the motherboard. Technically it is not end user authorized, so I cannot tell you 100% you will be OK doing it as far as warranty, but if it were mine I would not hesitate.

It has 2 slots and can take up to 16 gigs or 2 x 8 gig DDR3L-1600 modules of the specified type.

That is not a model I recognize. How to find model:

These days, a lot of laptops have no memory access door and in that case you have to do some major disassembly, like even motherboard removal. It can be done but puts the warranty in jeopardy, and you might get halfway in and not be able to get yourself out again. Some just need the back cover removed which is not easy but not as bad as motherboard removal.

We stand ready to help, though.

This is the information at the bottom of my HP Support Assistant page.  I bought this laptop online 3 months ago from HP.   I ordered it with 8 gigs of memory, which is probably enough I suppose, but I always try to get more if possible, but it is looking like doing that with this laptop may be difficult and very impracticle.

This is the HP laptop I bought 3 months ago. It appears still so new that even an HP rep has never heard of this model?

I am glad to hear the memory is not soldered in. The second problem is finding the memory to purchase. I have tried 2 of the usual places I buy memory online and they do not recognize this computer model and I have not been able to find where and how to get it from HP. So if I just buy DDR3L-1600, that should work? I have 8 gigs now. I need to find out which slots are populated, 2-4gigs, or 1-8gig.

You can use something like CPU-Z or Speccy to tell, without opening the computer, how many slots are occupied. I am pretty sure you will have 1 x 8 gig module. If so, you want to duplicate it. The two specs to be sure you duplicate are latency and density. The module you buy needs to have the same number of black blocks on the side and have the same CL= number in the description.

This is the specified module:

8-GB (PC3L, 12800, 1600-MHz) 693374-005

http://www.amazon.com/Kingston-Technology-1600MHz-PC3-12800-KVR16LS11/dp/B00CQ35HBQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UT...

It is 8 black blocks and CL = 11.

I appreciate all the help. It was easier to replace the memory than the video on You Tube showed. I still wish there were access doors on the back, but the memory is installed and the computer works great.  The main suggestion would be work carefully and slowly. It helps if you have good tools and some experience with this kind of work. I have been repairing desktop computers for many years, but laptops are not as simple to deal with.  Thanks again for the help with this project.

Glad it worked out for you
