Hello,
When booting up this laptop I get a message that the cooling fan isn't working. The laptop seems to function just fine anyway, but I'm wondering if it's something I can fix or replace myself. Thanks for any advice.

Yes.
If you have the patience and attention to detail required for the task, it is something you can do yourself.
Take photos as you progress and keep the tiny bits in a cup or something similar so they don't get lost.
I will have to say that given the age of the laptop you may find the parts very difficult to come by.
You must realize that this won't be the last item to fail at around 13 years of service.
If the hard disk or system board haven't been replaced already, they are probably near the end of their service life also

Thanks Erico. Yeah, I know it's on its last legs. I'm just using it as a backup cause my wife's iMac is failing also. I replaced the hard drive with an SSD, so that part of it is running great. It seems to have no issues otherwise. How do I go about finding the correct part for it? I don't know how to find the model number for the fan or where to look to buy it.

Well, I tried opening it up to remove the bottom lid -- or so I thought. It's much more complex than I thought. You have to take out all the screws from the bottom, remove the hard drive, then flip it over and remove the keyboard, unscrew the top panel and disconnect a bunch of stuff -- and then -- you can finally get to the motherboard where you can find the cooling fan attached. A bit much for me right now, so it'll have to wait.

UMA systems are those that do not have a discrete, or separate video chip or module.
If you can provide the product number I should be able to tell you whether yours is a UMA or discrete system.
When logged into Windows, hold down the Windows key and tap the R key once.
That will open the Windows run dialogue
Type in msinfo32 and press enter.
The ninth line is the SKU and the HP product number. Kindly post it in your next reply in your thread.
The System SKU/Product ID will enable us to determine the hardware configuration of your notebook.
