HP Spectre x360 16 inch 2-in-1 Laptop PC 16-f0000 (39R26AV)

I inserted a microSD card into the slot on the side of my PC. Rather than clicking into place like all other SD card readers I've used, the card just went into the machine and disappeared. When I look at File Explorer it does not show an SD card. And if I look inside the slot there is nothing I can pull back out. What is wrong? Where did my microSD go??? And how is the card supposed to be inserted to make sure it doesn't happen again?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Hi @TorinoJohn

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

You're definitely not the only one who's had this happen with the HP Spectre x360 16-f0000 series. Based on similar reports, it sounds like the microSD card may have slipped past the actual card reader slot and into the chassis—especially if it didn’t click into place and vanished without a trace.

Here’s what’s likely going on and how to handle it:

What Happened

  • The microSD slot is recessed and may not have a clear tactile “click” like other readers.
  • If the card was inserted at a slight angle or with too much force, it may have missed the connector and slipped into the internal casing.
  • Unfortunately, this means the card is not accessible via File Explorer, and you won’t be able to pull it out without opening the device.

What You Can Do

1. Inspect with a flashlight

  • Shine a light into the slot to see if the card is visible but misaligned.
  • If you can see it, avoid using tweezers or sharp tools, as they may damage internal components.

2. Contact HP Support

  • This situation may require professional disassembly to retrieve the card safely.

3. Prevent Future Issues

  • Always insert the microSD card label-side up, gently and straight.
  • Use a microSD-to-SD adapter if you prefer a more tactile insertion experience.
  • Avoid forcing the card—if it doesn’t feel right, stop and recheck alignment.

Let me know if you’d like help locating a local HP service center or our phone support team.

You’re clearly being careful—let’s make sure your Spectre stays in top shape.

Thanks for the reply, @Hawks_Eye !  I am really disappointed in HP for designing a laptop with such an inadequate MicroSD slot that would even allow a card to disappear inside. You have to insert it so far into the machine before you know if it got in the slot or not (I got one out of three to insert correctly) that it’s so far in there before you know you’ve missed that “correct angle” that you can’t reach it again to try and extract it! If it had happened just to me I would blame myself but as you wrote, many people have reported this issue. HP management should have taken proactive steps to mitigate this by sending out an external SD card reader to owners of this machine — especially for those of us who bought direct from HP as I did — they have our records and certainly could have averted this problem for me.

As it went, I certainly wasn’t going to risk opening the machine myself and am fortunate I have a trusted place which did that for me. They told me that due to the PC’s design, the cards ended up behind the motherboard so they had needed to lift that out as well to find the microSD cards — so in a way, this design risked the motherboard as well as I’m sure any lifted of it carries the potential of messing up that board too. Fortunately after a hiccup and error message when I restarted the PC — I panicked seeing that — it did reboot on the second try.

In the end, this cost me hours of time, a €30 payment to the repair shop which gave me a good price before knowing of the extra need with the motherboard, plus having to pay for an External SD reader instead of HP proactively offering me one.

I appreciate your time in answering and I just wish news of this problem would get passed up to Top Management at HP as a “worst practice.” Poor design without corrective action is a conscious neglect of customers.

p.s. I am hesitant to click this was an “acceptable solution” not because you were incorrect in explaining but in that HP as a corporation should have had a process to correct it proactively. The solution says to shine a flashlight in to see if the card is there but then said don’t use tweezers to try and extract it. So even if I could see it with a flashlight I wouldn’t know what I could do about it; it is too late to extract in any safe way and I certainly wouldn’t want to shake the laptop to see if it might fall back out.

I hope you have a terrific day as well and thank you personally for your time in responding.
