Today, my notebook gave me the Hard Disk 1 (301)  error, detecting an imminent failure. I tried doing the system diagnostics test but it gives me the message, "No hard drive installed". I tried doing some of the suggested youtube troubleshoot ideas to no avail. Do I need to send it to a repair shop? Did I lose all my info if I didn't back it up? Thank you in advanced.

Hi@lkwa_822,

Welcome to the HP Support Community! I'd like to help!

I see you are experiencing hard drive issues with the HP Notebook. It is a hardware issue on the PC and needs a repair.

As we have limited support boundaries in the support community as of now. I would request you to contact our HP Support Engineers and should be able to sort this out. HP provides repair or service options for out of warranty products as well. Hence I encourage you to contact HP support for all warranty service options.

Please reach out to the HP Technical Support team in your region regarding the service/replacement options.

Follow the instructions below to reach them:

1) Click on this link - https://support.hp.com/us-en/contact-hp

2) Select your product type below.

3) Enter the serial of your device.

4) Select the country from the drop-down.

5) Select the chat or get phone number options based on your preferences.

6) Fill the web form and proceed further.

If you are having trouble navigating through the above options, it's most likely because the device is out of warranty. If yes? please send me a private message with the region you are contacting us from. Check next to your profile name, you should see a little blue envelope, please click on it.

For any hardware issue or repair please click on the link Phone Assist Worldwide

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

First indication based on the info you provided it seems likely the hard drive has failed. We can help you repair it if you want to give it a try. Be advised while it's not that hard to replace a hard drive, but you also will have to reinstall Windows and whatever apps you use. We can help with that, too.

More than likely you have lost all your data if the drive has failed. I backup my laptop to 2 locations myself and can usually be up and running within a couple hours once I have a drive in hand.

One good thing about this is you can go the SSD route instead of a mechanical drive and enjoy the speed they provide.

Completely second PBroussard's response!  If you are still under warranty that's one thing, but if not, as long as you're willing to commit a couple of hours of your time, installing a replacement drive is not terribly difficult and much less costly.  Replacing that hard drive with a 2.5" SATA SSD will result in an amazing jump in responsiveness.  NOTE: While your model does sport a M.2 slot that supports a M.2 SATA SSD, if you've never done this before, I recommend buying a 2.5" SSD that will be an exact replacement for your current hard drive.  They are inexpensive and you'll think that laptop is on steroids.

Although there are hard drive recovery services, unless you have some absolutely unbearable to lose files, I'd chalk it up to experience. Hard drive file recovery services are generally quite costly and seldom guaranteed. Next time have a backup plan and follow it, all storage devices fail sooner...or later.
