My HP Spectre laptop had this problem a few months ago. The touchpad would be very unresponsive where it would either move the cursor with delay or not be responsive at all. Along with this on the screen, sometimes the cursor would move left to right sporadically and click at random intervals (at times the mouse would move left to right incredibly fast). Another issue that is happening is that laptop would occasionally zoom in or zoom out while the cursor has its mind of its own. Along with this, the laptop occasionally alt-tabs. I think it is a hardware issue but I am not sure.

Hi @Tim12310,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're experiencing some frustrating issues with your HP Spectre x360. The erratic behavior you're describing could be caused by a few different factors, both hardware and software-related. Here are some steps to troubleshoot the problems.
Check for External Devices
- Unplug any external mice, keyboards, or other peripherals to see if the issue persists. Sometimes, malfunctioning peripherals can cause erratic behavior.
Update Drivers
- Update Touchpad Drivers:
- Go to Device Manager (right-click on the Start button and select Device Manager).
- Expand Mice and other pointing devices.
- Right-click on your touchpad driver and select Update driver.
- Update Windows:
- Ensure your Windows operating system is fully updated, as updates can include fixes for hardware issues.
Check Touchpad Settings
- Open Settings > Devices > Touchpad and ensure that the touchpad settings are correctly configured. You can also try disabling any gestures that might be causing unintended actions.
Run Hardware Diagnostics
- HP Hardware Diagnostics:
- Turn off your laptop.
- Turn it back on and repeatedly press the Esc key until the Startup Menu opens.
- Press F2 to run the diagnostics.
- Check for any hardware issues reported, particularly with the touchpad or other input devices.
Check for Malware
- Run a full system scan using Windows Defender or another trusted antivirus program to rule out any malware that could be affecting your system's performance.
Adjust Touchpad Sensitivity
- In the touchpad settings, try adjusting the sensitivity. Sometimes, setting it to a different level can resolve erratic behavior.
Perform a System Restore
- If the issue started after a recent update or software installation, consider performing a System Restore to revert back to a point when the laptop was functioning correctly.
Reset or Reinstall Touchpad Driver
- If updating doesn't help, you could also try uninstalling the touchpad driver and then restarting your laptop. Windows should automatically reinstall the driver.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
