Hi @MedicJoe
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It seems like you're encountering an issue where your AC adapter is no longer recognized or is giving you a warning. This can happen for various reasons, even with the original adapter that came with the laptop. Here’s a list of troubleshooting steps to help resolve the issue:
1. Check the AC Adapter and Power Cable
Before troubleshooting the laptop itself, ensure that the AC adapter and power cable are in good condition.
Fix:
- Inspect the Adapter: Check the AC adapter and power cord for any visible signs of wear, fraying, or damage. Even small damages can cause charging issues.
- Inspect the Power Port: Check the laptop’s charging port (where the adapter plugs in) for any dust, dirt, or debris that could be causing a poor connection.
- If any visible issues are found, you may need to replace the AC adapter or the power cable.
2. Unplug, Reset, and Reconnect
Sometimes, the issue can be a temporary connection glitch between the adapter and your laptop.
Fix:
- Unplug the AC adapter from both the laptop and the wall outlet.
- Wait 30 seconds to 1 minute to ensure the laptop is fully powered off.
- Plug the adapter back in firmly and check if the charging light comes on, and the laptop powers up correctly.
3. Try a Different Power Outlet
The issue could also be a problem with the outlet you are using.
Fix:
- Try plugging the AC adapter into a different wall outlet to ensure that the outlet is not the cause of the issue.
- If you have a surge protector or power strip, try plugging the adapter directly into the wall to eliminate the surge protector as a potential cause.
4. Check for Overheating
If the AC adapter or laptop is overheating, it can cause charging issues.
Fix:
- Let the laptop and adapter cool down for a while if they feel hot to the touch. Heat can cause the adapter to malfunction temporarily.
- Ensure the laptop's cooling system (fan and vents) is working properly and not clogged with dust, which could be causing it to overheat.
5. Inspect the Battery Health (if applicable)
Some laptops display warnings if the battery or AC adapter is not functioning properly, especially if the battery health is degraded.
Fix:
- Check the battery health (if your laptop supports this feature). For Windows, you can check this through the Battery Report:
- Open Command Prompt and type: powercfg /batteryreport.
- Navigate to the folder listed in the output and open the battery-report.html file.
- Look for any "battery health" issues.
- For macOS, go to System Preferences > Battery > Battery Health to see the status.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
