My HP Envy has been updating all day. Is there anything I can do?

Hi @Crad98,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

If your HP Envy laptop has been updating all day, it’s likely stuck or taking longer than usual due to a large update or a system issue. Here’s what you can try to fix the issue:

Step 1: Check If It’s Stuck

  • Look for signs of activity:
    • Is the loading animation moving?
    • Is the hard drive light blinking?
    • Do you hear fan or disk sounds?

If yes, it might still be working—give it more time, especially if it's a major Windows update.

Step 2: If It’s Stuck

If it’s been frozen for hours with no signs of progress:

Option A: Force Restart

  1. Hold down the power button for 10–15 seconds until the laptop shuts off.
  2. Wait 30 seconds, then power it back on.
  3. Windows may resume the update or roll it back.

Option B: Boot into Safe Mode

If it fails to boot normally:

  1. Turn it on and off 3 times during the HP logo screen to trigger Windows Recovery.
  2. Choose Advanced Options > Startup Settings > Restart.
  3. Press F4 to boot into Safe Mode.

Step 3: Run Windows Update Troubleshooter

Once you’re back in Windows:

  • Go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters
  • Run the Windows Update troubleshooter

Optional: Free Up Space

If your storage is nearly full, updates can stall. Use Disk Cleanup or Storage Sense to clear space.

I hope this helps.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
