Screencapture Video of the issue - [Content Removed]
This has been happening since a year or so ago. None of my phone or tablet or anyone else's phone can connect but an external HDD does, same for any pendrive or mouse or keyboard dongle. All this is through the 3 USB ports on the laptop 2x USB A and a singular USB C. The one on the left of the laptop does not show the device on My Computer/This PC at all but the device (Android Phone, Android Tablet) do charge. The other type A port and the type C port will show the device on file explorer but it flickers and goes away and comes back repeatedly but the device does charge. I took this to the Service Center but they couldn't find anything. Now i don't have warranty. So i hope its just a Software issue.

Any help would be greatly Appreciated.

Hi @Solar_Sparrow,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you’re facing a frustrating issue with unstable USB connections, particularly with Android devices, on your HP Pavilion 14. Since your external HDD, USB drives, and peripherals like a mouse or keyboard work fine, but Android devices have trouble connecting, it seems like the issue may indeed be software or driver-related rather than a hardware failure.
Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:
Check USB Drivers and Update Them:
- Open Device Manager (you can search for it in the Start menu).
- Expand the Universal Serial Bus Controllers section.
- Right-click on each USB Root Hub and Generic USB Hub, then select Update driver.
- You can also right-click the Android Device listed under Portable Devices (when it's connected), and select Update driver.
- Check for updates on the AMD chipset drivers as well, especially for the USB controller.
Reinstall USB Controllers:
- In Device Manager, under Universal Serial Bus Controllers, right-click and Uninstall device for each USB hub.
- After uninstalling, restart the laptop. Windows will reinstall the necessary drivers automatically.
Ensure MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) Drivers Are Installed:
- When you connect your Android device, ensure it’s set to File Transfer (MTP) mode. You can check this from the notification panel on your phone once it's plugged in.
- If your device doesn’t appear in File Explorer, open Device Manager and look for Portable Devices. If there’s an issue with the MTP driver, it may need reinstallation.
- Right-click the MTP USB Device entry and select Update Driver. If it doesn’t show, try manually installing the MTP USB driver.
Check Power Settings:
- Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings.
- Expand USB settings > USB selective suspend setting, and set it to Disabled for both On battery and Plugged in.
Test with Different Cables and Ports:
- Although the devices charge, ensure the cables you’re using are data-capable (some cables only carry power).
- Try switching between the USB Type-A and USB-C ports and observe if the flickering behavior is consistent across them.
Run the Windows Troubleshooter:
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
- Run the Hardware and Devices Troubleshooter to check for any issues related to USB devices.

Check for Windows and Driver Updates:
- Ensure that Windows 11 is fully updated by going to Settings > Windows Update and checking for updates.
- Also, visit the HP support website for your specific Pavilion 14 model to see if there are any new driver updates for USB or chipset drivers.
BIOS Settings:
- Since you mentioned that your BIOS is on the latest version, ensure that the USB ports are enabled in the BIOS. You can try restoring BIOS to default settings to see if it affects the USB behavior.
Test with Another Operating System:
- If possible, test by booting your laptop with a Live Linux USB to see if the issue persists there. If it works fine on Linux, the issue is likely software-related in Windows.
Check for Conflicts:
- Sometimes third-party software (like security software) can interfere with USB connections. Try disabling such programs temporarily to see if it resolves the issue.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
