Respected Sir/Madam,
I am writing to report an issue regarding my HP laptop's battery. Recently, while using my laptop, the battery got stuck at 8% and the device would shut down instantly when the charger was unplugged. To check the problem, I ran the HP Battery Check diagnostic on 22nd of June, which showed the following result:
Logic State: Bad Cell
Charge State: OK
This indicated that one or more battery cells had malfunctioned, though the charging system was fine. Based on this, I was concerned that the battery might need repair or replacement.
However, after not using the laptop for a day, I powered it on again with power plugged in and ran the Battery Check tool once more — this time, the result showed normal status, and there was no ‘Bad Cell’ warning displayed.
Due to this inconsistent behavior, I am confused about whether the battery is truly failing or if it was a temporary glitch. I request your kind guidance on whether I should still consider replacing the battery or if this can be ignored.
Thanking you.

Hi there @Anand071, Welcome to HP Support Community!
Thank you for reaching out with your concern about the battery. I'm glad to assist you today.
I understand your concern regarding the inconsistent battery diagnostics on your Victus by HP Gaming Laptop 15-fa0000 (680A4AV). I’ll be happy to guide you through this.
What “Bad Cell” Means:
The “Bad Cell” message indicates that one or more cells in the battery are not functioning properly. This can lead to:
- Inability to hold charge
- Sudden shutdowns
- Reduced battery life
Even if the message disappears temporarily, it may still point to intermittent hardware degradation.
Recommended Steps:
Re-run HP Battery Check in HP Support Assistant:
- Open HP Support Assistant → Go to Battery Check.
- If not installed, download it here: HP Support Assistant | HP® Support
Run HP Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI):
- Shut down the laptop.
- Power it on and immediately press Esc, then F2.
- Select Component Tests > Power > Battery Test.
- Note the Battery Status and Failure ID (if any).
Check Battery Health in Windows:
- Open Command Prompt as Administrator.
- Run: powercfg /batteryreport
- This generates a report at: C:\Users\[YourName]\battery-report.html
- Look for Design Capacity vs Full Charge Capacity.
Observe Battery Behavior:
- If the battery still drops to 8% and shuts down, it’s a strong sign of cell failure.
What to Do Next:
If the issue reappears or the battery fails diagnostics:
- The battery likely needs replacement.
If the issue does not reoccur, continue monitoring. However, intermittent failures often worsen over time.
Additional Tips:
- Avoid using the laptop on extreme heat or soft surfaces that block ventilation.
- Keep BIOS and drivers updated via HP Support Assistant.
