I have been noticing this problem on my HP Pavilion laptop for a month now.

I will be charging my laptop, doing normal things on my laptop, with my original AC adapter that came with my laptop plugged in, and it all of a sudden stops charging. I notice this because my brightness changes, the icon on my taskbar that shows me it's charing changes to just the battery. 5 seconds pass and it then connects again. I have found a similar article to my problem, but it is with a different laptop.

I will answer the questions that are in the response. I have tried a different AC adapter, that is exactly like the original, problem still happens; so it's internal. I have tried different outlets, power strips, still happens; so it's nothing electrical. I have updated my laptop before this happened, and while this problem has been happening as well, (there's also an update right now as I'm typing this) problem persists. I haven't made ANY software changes. It doesn't drain quick while unplugged, so my battery is healthy. The pin inside is also intact, both in the AC adapter and in the laptop itself.

I have also called my warranty company, SquareTrade. They have lead me through some trouble shooting to help fix it. First, i have uninstalled and reinstalled my battery drivers. I have also done the diagnostics, to see if there is anything wrong with my AC adapter or anything internal, they have passed with flying colors. But, I have heard that they can sometimes be false positives. I have also tried to do a hard reset on my laptop, problem persists. I have also tried to completely reset my laptop to factory settings, it fails. I have also freshly reinstalled windows 10, problem still happens.

I recently had to send my laptop to get fixed due to my lid of my laptop becoming unhinged from the base, into SquareTrade to be repaired. They stated they would also look into the charging issue. I sent my laptop off last week on Monday 03/02/20 and I just got it back today. New lid, great, good as new. Wrong. The disconnecting issue is still there, it has happened twice since it being home.

This problem sometimes happens multiple times within an hour, only happens once or twice, or doesn't happen for a day or two. Please help me fix this problem. SquareTrade lied to me saying they'd fix it, and they didn't. I am still under my 2-year- warranty, it ends in December of this year.

EDIT: I have noticed that my laptop doesn't charge over 80%, this is when the disconnection happens. My laptop has been charging for 2 hours now, and it hasn't gone above 80%.

Thank you in advance.

I reviewed your post and I understand that the battery is not getting charged.

Don’t worry, I assure you I will try my best to get this sorted.

I recommend you update the BIOS and the chipset driver from the below link and check whether the issue is resolved.

If you continue facing the issue, then restore the BIOS defaults and check.

Here is how it is done.

  1. Backup and save important information on your computer, and then turn off the computer.
  2. Turn on the computer, and then click F10, until the BIOS opens.
  3. Under the Main tab, use the up and down arrow keys to select Restore Defaults. ...
  4. Select Yes.
  5. Under the Main tab, use the up and down arrow keys to select Save Changes and Exit.
  6. When prompted, click Yes to save changes and exit.

Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!

Thank you so much! This worked, and this was an easy fix!

Am I safe to do the Windows update? Because this issue happened AFTER I did a Windows update.

Thank you!

Edit: Disregard, it just happened again. I'm wondering if I do the Windows Update it fixes the problem.

Edit #2: It is charging though, but it disconnects at about or at 80%; that is why I'm wondering if the Windows Update will fix the problem. Before I updated the BIOS, it wouldn't charge above 80%, but now it is.

Edit #3: I have done the Windows Update, and it hasn't disconnected, so hopefully the issue has been solved.
