@Minnie_B, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Yeah, totally understandable to hesitate before buying a new charger — there are a few things to check first before spending money. Here’s a quick checklist to help narrow it down:
⚡️ First, basic checks:
1. Check the Power Adapter & Cable:
- Any LED on the charger? If your power adapter has an LED, see if it lights up when plugged in.
- Try a different wall socket just to rule that out.
- Look for physical damage: fraying, bent pins, or burn smells.
2. Check the Charging Port (DC-in port):
- Use a flashlight to look inside. Any damage? Loose or wobbly feeling when you plug in?
3. Remove External Devices:
- Disconnect everything: USB devices, external monitor, SD card, etc.
🔋 Battery-related tests:
If your HP 17" model has a removable battery, try this:
➤ Hard Reset (with removable battery):
- Unplug the power cord.
- Remove the battery.
- Press and hold the power button for 15–20 seconds.
- Reconnect the power cord (without the battery) and try turning it on.
➤ Hard Reset (non-removable battery):
- Unplug the power adapter.
- Press and hold the power button for 15–30 seconds.
- Plug in the power adapter and try turning it on again.
💡 Signs of life?
After pressing the power button:
- Any LED blink at all? (power light, caps lock light, charging LED, etc.)
- Any fan sound or screen flicker?
- If absolutely nothing happens, the issue could be:
- Faulty charger
- Faulty DC jack on the motherboard
- Dead motherboard
- Power button board failure
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
