A guest stole my HP Realtree camo laptop that I had just replaced the HD and loaded Windows 11 on. I didn't use a 'find my device ' app, and didn't even have it locked. Someday, maybe we'll be able to lock/wipe/locate a laptop when it's stolen, just by using the MAC address? So many people lose their laptop with no chance of recovering it, because they were careless, and see no use in filing a police report and won't, like me. I should have installed some sort of tracking, correct?

In the USA, theft by burglary is covered under homeowners and renters insurance. You would need a police report to file a claim.
I would be upset about a theft, but I would get money to replace my laptop.
I would have no idea how it works in your country.
There is LoJack, which works at a firmware and software level and HP's Absolute Home & Office theft protection.
That is about as good as it gets.
